Retired major helps uncover long-lost African American cemetery in San Antonio neighborhood
In 2018, the San Antonio African American Community Archive Museum hosted a daylong cleanup of the parcel of land. The Texas A&M architectural team scanned the area for burials.

Their mission now is to have the graveyard rededicated and designated as a historical Texas cemetery. The Center for Archaeological Research at the University of Texas at San Antonio identified three potential grave markers at the cemetery, which was in use until 1971.

"Everett opened up the floodgates to getting the cemetery cleaned and cleared," Wright said. "And put it on the radar of other historical organizations."

In the future, Wright envisions a day when he writes a book about Warren, the progressive matriarch of the Hockley-Freeman-Clay family.

Linda Wright, 62, said she's proud of her husband's determination to uncover the story of settlers who may have been forgotten.

"He's very much a historian," she said. "He goes the extra mile. I'm grateful for him helping to get information out so these people who have passed on can be treated with respect."
