Starting my yearly tradition of watching band of brothers tonight with episode 2- Day of Days.

I know, it's a facebookish post but this always resets my perspective.

That clip is probably my favorite scene out of the entire miniseries. The score, the solemnity, hits me. Kind of neat too they only had like 5 C-47s that actually flew too.

If anyone else was around in 2001 when this aired, remember when they showed this episode to the Corps in Rudder Theatre. It was amazing on the big screen

And that's from last summer. I can't find anything from more recent on whether they're both still alive or not.

I am a veteran of its successor unit and I try to keep up with news on veterans from our company of other eras, but I have been off Facebook for the last two months. To my knowledge they are both still alive.

You cannot do BoB D-Day without also including the first 30 minutes of SPR.

D-Day

And then there is the scene where looking through the dog tags.

That's some hard sh8t to watch and its just a movie.....

James Earl Rudder

I came across this CSPAN presentation by the U.S. Army Historian from 2012 on Rudder's Rangers. It's an hour long.

The problem with the Longest Day is he flubs the Rangers/Poine du Hoc story. Ryan never spoke to James Earl Rudder (who kind of ignored him because he didn't like one of his other books). So he wrote the story in the book, which is also in the movie, that the rangers climbed the hills to take out the German guns, but there were no guns, suggesting they wasted all of those lives.

Well that is true to a point, but only a point. The Germans had installed fake guns in the positions on the pre-invasion photos, but the real guns were still in the area, and had been moved to camoflage positions nearby. Rudder's team located them and destroyed them, thus completing their mission.

Also amazing is rudder held for 2 days with 40% of his troop strength.

I saw an interesting tidbit on the Battleship Texas IG yesterday, that apparently on June 7th, the Marine detachment on the USS Texas had organized to reinforce the Rangers, but were told to stand down.

Texas also sent supplies to the Rangers, and received 35 wounded Rangers in return, one of whom died of his wounds on the ship.

The Texas also flooded some of her torpedo blister to create a list so her guns could gain a few more degrees of elevation to shell some targets that were just a hair out of range.

Hell would have frozen over before the Army would have allowed the Marines ashore. Same reason they basically blew off the advice of the commander of the Navy's amphibious forces in the Southern Pacific.

This happened something like a week or two later when they were trying to reach road junctions inland and other "strategic" targets. They were extremely accurate. The Germans had standing orders that their communications assets be at a minimum of 1 kilometer away from their HQs because the Allies were pinpointing their positions through triangulation.

Never understood why they didn't correct the info at the end of that episode regarding Blithe.
