Way back there, I happened upon a story in "Playboy" title "The Boy Who Bought the Earth" by someone named Cordwainer Smith.
I liked it very much and followed up to find it was from a novel named "Norstrilia" in which a boy facing elimination uses his resources (and even the children on Old North Australia have considerable resources as it is the only planet that can raise the strange, giant, sick sheep that produce a valuable life extending drug) to switch places with his brother when it came time for the abortion committee to vote.

I think it was a pseudonym of Harlan Ellison.

Ellison wasn't fit to lick Linebarger's shoes.

I still remember a couple of his short stories.
'Alpha Ralpha Boulevard" and "Under Old Earth" as 2 of my favorites.

Almost all his stories can be read again without sounding dated.

Good Stuff.

Ellison's nom de plume was "Cordwainer Bird"
