I fail to see where I once wrote racist or racism in this thread, except to say I had no intention of calling you a racist. At this point that is only coming from you.

I believe i have already stated that the opposition to the Gaines statue seems to be more about modern political culture wars than historical accuracy, much like the statement between this one and yours.

Why?

He didn't do a thing but vote one time.
Along with 20 other senators

eye roll for the virtue signaling tokenism of elevating a man above his peers and erecting a statue to him because of his color on the pretext of a group accomplishment.

First of all, thank you for providing a link! Second please excuse my ignorance, but what are you implying by him not being present when it went to the house when he was in the senate?
Because you at least provided a link, I would like to provide one back: https://web.archive.org/web/20160311140945/http://www.tamu.edu/faculty/gaines/HR00753F.html

"he worked and voted for the successful enabling legislation that made possible the creation of Texas A&M University in 1871 and Prairie View A&M University in 1876"

It doesn't say "instrumental" but does give him credit for more than just voting for the bill.

So the vote was 21 to 4.

Did you not read pmart's posts?

Quote:

according to TAMU, he was instrumental in getting the bill passed.

TRUE

Quote:

He was a Texas legislator who helped the formation of a Texas institution of higher learning.

TRUE

i think because of the metaphorical freedom education brought him, he believed there was great power in it and as a leader of the state he fought to bring education to all through the passage of Senate Bill 276, which lead to the creation of A&M

through his fight for education for african americans, Texas A&M was created.

And the biggest of his howlers:

Quote:

i think it is a mistake to downplay the significance of even one vote for this bill. by no means was the passing of the bill and creation of texas a&m a foregone conclusion.
Quote:

TRUE AS IN THAT IS MY OPINION

pmart does not seem to even know that the 12th Legislature was seated under martial law, direct supervision of Union Troops, voter fraud, closing of polls in Democrat counties, and several heavily Democrat counties being completely uncounted.

So now we've gone from a web page to a House Resolution, both making claims without support.

The resolution also states
Quote:

he worked unrelentingly for the militia bill
Yeah, you might want to read up on that bill, which was overturned, once free elections were re-established

Gaines apparently gave a very good speech regarding immigration of Africans to Texas. It can be found online.

https://digital.sfasu.edu/digital/collection/EastTexRC/id/3248

But yet, no speech available regarding the Morill Act vote.

In addition, lots of links to Gaines' life. None reference Morill.

https://www.tsl.texas.gov/exhibits/forever/representation/page7.html

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matthew_Gaines

And a book about the Texas Senate, 1861-1889. No mention of his support for the Morill Act.

Here's the last page of that speech. It was in regard to a bill being debated to send representatives of the State of Texas to Europe, to encourage immigration to Texas. Gaines asked for a representative to be sent to Africa.

He got some good zingers in.
