The opening battle of the Overland Campaign; the beginning of the end.

"Hurrah for Texas!" A.P. Hill said as the Texans arrived in the nick of time to save one of his artillery battalions from being captured by the Federals.
What followed was another famous quote that came from the Texas Brigade itself at the Widow Tapp Field. As the Texans formed to drive the Federals back, Lee showed up in front of them to lead the assault. The Texans would have it and forced Lee to the rear. "Lee to the rear!" were the shouts. As he move to the rear the Texas Brigade moved forward with their attack.

Actually took place on the morning of the second day as Longstreets Corps arrived on the field. Another location I always have to visit just because.

I have this Troiani print in my library..

Sorry. TL;DR. Texas troops save the day.

Dawn. May 6,1864. General WS Hancock's II Corps launches an assault on General AP Hills Corps who neglected to entrench during the night. Confederate Infantry is driven back and begins to flee. A single battalion of Confederate Artillery and Generals Lee, Hill and their staffs are the only Confederates troops maintaining cohesion. As the gunners try to slow down the Federal Infantry a column of Confederate Infantry comes onto the field at the double quick and begins to form into a line of battle. General Lee not recognizing the brigade commander asks "General, what troops are these". General John Gregg, new to the Army of Northern Virginia responds, "General these are Texas troops". The only Texas troops in the Army of Northern Virginia are the 1st, 4th and 5th Texas as well as the 3rd Arkansas (known affectionately within the brigade as the 3rd Texas) and they belong to General James Longstreets Corps, who had been marching since 3am and at the double quick for the last 2 miles. General Lee responds that General Gregg must attack immediately as those people (Federals) will stand there all day unless you give them the bayonet. General Gregg commands the brigade "Attention Brigade. The eyes of General Lee are upon you. Forward March." Lee responds with "Texans always MOVE them". The men of the brigade with in ear shot begin to cheer and as the words travel down the line the cheer grows. Lee, uncharacteristically caught up in the emotion of the moment, rides to the front as of to lead the charge, which was tantamount to suicide as approximately 800men were advancing into 10,000. As the legend states the brigade halts their advance even as men are beginning to be shot down and refuse to move forward proclaiming "Go back General Lee, go back. We won't go for award until you go back". Other men begin to chant and yell "Lee to the rear". With (supposedly PVT Leonard Groce Gee) a soldier clutching the reins of Traveller, Lee is led behind the lines and the brigade continues their advance. Just under 600 men would fall, killed wounded and missing but their advance bought time to stabilize the line.

After the battle a simple marker was placed upon the mass grave of the brigade. It was simply a wooden plank nailed to a tree with the word "Texas Dead" written on it.
