VDH is always very good, imho, but this is quite interesting context as to the beginning of the war and casualties net in the war that many have read extensively on.

The offensive was predominant is undoubtedly true. I am not sure that has not always been the case though, doctrinally.

This has been going on since the fall of the Roman Empire. A war in Europe ends, the diplomates redraw the map, some poor souls wind up on the wrong side of the line, and that sets the wheels in motion for the next war.
The person that is not willing to fight and die, if need be, for his country has no right to life.

And then, at the end of WW2, people went with with the alternative solution of drawing the borders arbitrarily and forcibly relocating millions of people to fit the new borders.
