Sixty one years ago today, Tusko The Elephant of the Oklahoma City Zoo was part of an experiment conducted by Dr. Louis Jolyon "Jolly" West and Dr. Chester M. Pierce, and Mr. Warren Thomas, head the city zoo. Tusko was injected to study the effects a new wonder drug LSD. Tusko was given 297 milligrams of LSD. The dose was approx 3000% above the normal dose given to humans. The scientists were hoping that the LSD would create a condition that causes elephants to go on a rampage called Musth. One hour and 40 min later Tusko was dead.

One of the scientists was psychiatrist Dr Jolly West, with quite an interesting resume. Dr West was known for his research into brainwashing of Korean War vets. He also participated in the MKUltra Project, an illegal experimentation project (with Nazi roots) funded by the CIA. The project involved drug experimentation to force confessions during interrogation. He studied the Haight-Ashbury hippie culture in San Francisco during the 60's. He was appointed as psychiatrist for Lee Harvey Oswald's assassin, Jack Ruby. He also testified as a brainwashing expert in the Patty Hearst trial.
