Wm Gaines: "We don't believe in merchandising" meant no ads
and a "What, me worry?" attitude that was popular at one time.
Warning - this starts serious with censorship history.

Brings back some memories. Chief among them was when I was a subscriber and in one issue they had some stencils of things like crow's feet walking up the page and a full page stencil of the face of Alfred E. Neuman. Back then, out in the country, when they held local elections, various candidates would have printed up some posters, fairly thick cardboard material, and nail them to trees, or to a backing material like plywood.

A friend of mine and I took cans of black spray paint and either put Newman's face over the picture of the candidate on the poster or did the crow's feet walking up their posters. A couple of those candidates got quite pissed about it, lol.

Thanks for posting.

Thanks. That was an enjoyable watch. My older brothers got me started on Mad Magazine in the '50s, and I read them until the '70s. Lots of great memories were dredged up from the clips.

Yes, my older brother got me turned on to MAD back in the late 60s, and I probably got more straight dope on American culture, society, and politics from MAD than anything they were telling us in school back in those days.

And yes, we had the issue with the stencils!!! (From1967 iirc). Years later when I was in high school band, I decorated my skako box* with that Alfred E. Neuman stencil (which ticked off my mom to no end, which was a bonus).

* this was a cardboard box, less than 1 cubic foot in volume, in which each bandsman/bandsgirl would carry around their head covering, called a shako. We were very low-tech in those days.

This honestly brings back memories of my youth. Used to go visit my uncle who was only 12 years older than me . He had a huge stash of Playboys and MAD magazines in his trailer house…. It was so freaking cool. Also had a 1970 Ford Grand Torino.
