The 60's produced some wild designs too, though not as prolific as the 50's. The F-4X 'super phantom' program eventually led to 4 ea. RF-4ES aircraft for the Israeli's (by General Dynamics, not the McDD folks), though the original plans were for an armed machine 3 interceptor variant. They flew/operated these until 2004.

It was cancelled in favor of the F-15 (as a political threat) but the mig-29 which was then developed to counter that never really reached its potential.

B24 Liberator. My Dad was a pilot during WW2.

I visited B24 bases at Rackheath and Seething UK last summer

The English people are doing a great job of keeping the history of those sites

Pretty good history behind the F-16's development/selection (and, tangentially the hornet).

For an entire era, I'd choose WWII.

However, my favorite individual military plane of all time is the F/A18.

Gentlemen,
I am a long time reader, but not poster of this forum. I am a career teacher and coach (entire career here in the Brazos Valley). If you live locally there is a chance I may have taught your child. I started something several years ago...a classroom ceiling project...hanging model airplanes to help teach my history classes. I currently have close to 50 1:48 scale planes displayed- divided into historical eras- WWI to "Wars in the Desert". Part teaching supplemental- part hobby for myself (both kids are out of the house- needed a hobby to fill the time I had previously spent on them). I had built planes as a kid with my dad (Class of '59 Robert A. Collins) and when my son (class of '26) was younger.

Since this is a "favorite planes" thread (my favorite has always been the P-47D Thunderbolt) I thought I'd post my presentation about my ceiling project (in PDF format). I have created a PowerPoint presentation with all the history about each model, art, WWII era photos, plane manufacturer, and pictures of the finished model (on my ceiling). I hope you enjoy browsing through this presentation (I have place Table of Content in each section). Any feed back would be appreciated. I imagine I will build until I hit retirement age- or run out of ceiling room:

The PDF is 473 slides...Google may make you download it because of the size...Sorry! It has grown over the years...the link is to my BISD Google account so it should be OK to download.
