I've always wondered how we were able to return many of the battleships sunk at Pearl Harbor to action. This is a 38-minute video, so cliff's notes - it was an amazing engineering effort employing wood panels attached to the hull of the California and huge winches used to right the Oklahoma.

The US was elite at repairing and refitting ships damaged in battle during the Pacific war. Nobody could do it like us.

There is a pretty good book on it called Raising the Fleet. Addresses every ship. They learned how to salvage things like electric motors and other equipment that had been submerged a while. Also the dangers to the divers of some things producing poison gas.

The two divers that were killed on the Nevada died due to poison gas. Polluted stagnant water combined with paper would produce hydrogen sulfide.

The 21 winches that were used to right the Oklahoma used 5 hp DC motors.

At first the largest pumps they had were 10" and 12". Later in the salvage process they had 18" and 20" diameter pumps.

I've been down the rabbit hole with this guy's videos. He puts together some really great stuff.
