From what I have read, the tree was planted sometime in the late 1800s. When did it get to a point in its development where it started to be recognized as an interesting/beautiful/unique tree?

BigJim49 might be able to answer. Was it "a thing" in the 40s/50s?

It was a nice tree in the early 80's, but I don't remember it ever being called The Century Tree then. Maybe it was, but my interests were less horticultural and more about coeds.
What do you boys want for breakfast BBQ ?.....OK Chili.

It was definitely called "The Century Tree" in the 90s.

The late Andy Duffie '78 from the Century Tree Project presented at one of my classes ~2020. They grow saplings from the tree and sell them across the country to raise money for scholarships at A&M. Pretty cool story, with the history of the tree linked above.

During his presentation, he showed the picture of the tree on the Academic Plaza, circa 1915.

I was at A&M 1967-1971 and I was in the Academic Building nearly every class day.

No one thought of that tree as special or called it the Century Tree.

Wife ('82) says the first time she heard it referred to as the Century Tree was her fish orientation in the summer of 78. I wonder if it turned 100 in 1978.

I do not recall ever once hearing the words,"century" and "tree" spoken in the same sentence during my four years, August 1979 through May 1983.
