Clowney is a hell of an athlete, and he deserved to be in manti's position last year more than manti did. But with his conditioning and effort level clowney is showing tonight that he is nowhere close to the best player in the country. 3 tackles in 42 out of 64 snaps. 3 tackles in 42 plays.
Maybe JC is imposing a penalty on himself for autographs by sitting out a total of half the game. He just didn't want to make it obvious by doing it all at once.
