Texas A&M parts ways with offensive line coach Dave Christensen

Texas A&M football coach Kevin Sumlin has fired offensive line coach Dave Christensen according to sources close to the Aggies athletic department.

There was no word of who would replace Christensen.

The move would end a disappointing one-year stint for Christensen, who arrived at A&M last year from Utah with a reputation for fielding strong offensive lines and coordinating productive running games.

However, the Aggies' running game struggled at times even though running back Tra Carson rushed for 1,165 yards.

Texas A&M averaged 169.1 rushing yards per game to rank a mediocre 66th in the nation in rushing offense. The Aggies also continued to struggle in short yardage situations.

A&M also allowed 37 sacks to rank 107th in the country.

I suspect they didn't want on NSD to make it look more out of control than losing two 5* QBs and firing the OC and making a somewhat suspect new OC hire...

One wonders if this means Klemm or someone else...

I never like to see a man lose his job, but our OL regressed appreciably under Christensen's stewardship. That simply cannot happen if you want to compete in the SEC West. Best of luck to him.

He was fired on signing day when DC called Sumlin about something and that is when Sumlin responded "We have decided to go in a different direction".

Sacrificial lamb--check OL recruiting for the last 3 years. Still, a change is likely a good thing if for no other reason than to give the new OC his own guy....

Any insights on how much Mazzone had to do with it?

Any replacement candidates being discussed?

I would hope a lot to be honest. I'm not going to defend the job he did...or didn't do, but to be fired after a season seems kind of shady to me. Especially when you're working with an OC that doesn't have a clue and QBs that weren't playing well (to put it kindly).

In the 3rd quarter against Louisville, we had the ball in their territory with 3rd and short. At the snap our offensive line stood straight up, got pushed back into the backfield, and Tra was tackled for a loss. Maybe now we will have a line that actually goes forward.

This.
Never wanted this guy. Can't imagine him being good at following directions after seeing that. His freakin daughter had to restrain him. Just saying. I don't like guys getting fired after one year but this guy should never have been here. If you haven't seen the video, it'll change your mind.

I assume there was some truth to this not going the way he was told it would. Our offensive staff last year consisted of a guy who had OC and HC experience at the college level and another coach who had been the boss in our offensive room. These guys had to work for a 30 year old who was trying to figure it out on the job under the tutelage of a hands-off managerial head coach. Sure, it worked with Kingsbury, but he played under Leach for the entirety of his college career and was blessed with Manziel.

Recipe for disaster. It would be an interesting case to study in a coaching class.

Bull**** he's a sacrificial lamb.

We have recruited pretty darn well along the OL. Plenty of size and athleticism to field solid units in the SEC. Did the 2013 class hold us back? Yes, but 2014, 2015, and now 2016 have been very good OL classes.

The prior OL coach recruited how many interior linemen while he was here?
