Notes from Billy's breakdown on Mond

  • There are two big things I like about him. The first is that he is a noticeably bigger dude now. He’s a broader shouldered bigger guy. He told me he’s gained 10 pounds this offseason. I wouldn’t be surprised if he was closer to 215 lbs. The second is that I’ve seen his progress throwing the football.
  • The dual threat thing is great. All things being equal, I will always go with the dual threat QB over the one that can’t create. All things have to be equal, though.  As long as the mobile QB doesn’t flee at the first sign of stress, and Kellen has showed he doesn’t do that, almost to a fault. There were times last year where I just wanted to him to run instead of waiting and waiting to throw.  
  • Were does he have to get better? That clock has to speed up, in terms of you can’t hold on to the ball in this conference. The O-Line won’t be there yet, where you can just sit comfortably in the pocket. And then the accuracy still. His development is plain to see. His ability to run is a game changer.  
  • As a football player, I see some Colin Kaepernick skill set, in terms of the size he’s going to end up being and the way he beats you running. He’s not a juke runner like Johnny, but he sees a lane and goes. He’s more of a straight-ahead runner. Because of who his coach is, I think he can be a much better passer than Kaepernick ever was.
  • My thing with Kellen. We know he’s improved a lot as a passer and that he can really hurt you running the ball. The other thing is that he’s pretty calm under pressure. He does have to prove that when the live bullets are flying, he can get rid of the football and find the right guy.

Yeah....get what Looch is going for but man, surely there's someone else he could compare him with. Makes me want Starkel just on principle.

Had a spirited but great conversation with some fellow Ags this summer on TexAgs about this. Looch touched on 3 of the 4 things I pointed out to them. Glad Looch was more objective and saw what I saw.

I'll reiterate that Kellen is simply a winner. He's been like this all his life. From 3 years in HS in San Antonio to leading IMG academy to an undefeated season, traveling from GA to TX to LA to CA to play the best in the country...and beating them all.

  • Kellen has the clutch gene. He beat Arkansas with a clutch NFL-caliber pass to Christian Kirk in OT.
  • With 2 minutes left on the clock, he drove down to beat Florida...doing something the great Manziel couldn't do. Against South Carolina, with a few minutes left in the game, he again led A&M to victory.
  • Versus 'Bama, he outplayed their starting QB by passing for 2x amount of yards and almost upsetting the #1 team in the country. Saban spoke about A&M for 3 days following that game.
  • In the spring game, he outplayed Starkel by throwing for 3 TD's with 0 interceptions. Starkel threw an INT and had an opportunity with 2 minutes left to do a "Mond" and win but he came up short.
  • Starkel also had exactly 2:10 against Wake Forest and again could not do a "Mond" and lead his team to a win.

The good news is both Starkel and Mond have grown in the short time they've had under Coach Fisher. We all look forward to Jimbo choosing the leader of this team.

It was his first collegiate game so I'll state that, but sure couldve used that "clutch" gene with the ucla score 43 to 10 or whatever in the 3rd qtr

If you listened to Looch, he addressed that game & mentioned the "clutch" gene run of 40-50 yards for the winning TDsgainst UCLA that was unfortunately called back b/c his toe was on the line. FB is a game of inches but wow!....What a play! Gig'em baby

Did you really just compare Mond to Manziel?

Your list might have some good things to think about. I will never know. Because I can't get past that statement.
