Notes from Liucci’s breakdown on Renfro
- I think he has a chance to earn a paycheck playing pro football in the NFL. I think he’s that talented. Consistency has been an issue for him. The game from last year that stuck out on that front for him was Mississippi State. He almost had a pick-six early in the game. He was in position to make a ton of plays, but it turned out to be a rough night for him.
- Nobody on the A&M secondary last year would’ve said they had a great season, including Donovan Wilson. A&M really missed Renfro when he was ejected for a totally BS call against South Carolina. That hurt them. You didn’t hear about him a lot last year, and that’s a good thing.
- Renfro is probably their most physical corner. If he walked in here right now, he’s a tall, big shoulder dude. Extremely physical.
- A couple of years ago, we went down to Houston to watch a lot of guys compete in 7-on-7. There was a lot of talent on the field: Lamb, Delpit, Derrick Tucker, so many others. Debione Refrone was out there. He stuck out among all of those other big-name recruits because he was going the same stuff as these other guys. It wasn’t long after that that A&M took him. He has lived up to it as well.
- If Debione Renfro can hang on to a starting spot, he could have 26 or 27 games left as a college football player. He hasn’t even come close to reaching his ceiling.
- He can cover. He’s a gifted athlete. He can come down the field and hit you. Combine that with his successful cornerback mentality. He’s gotta stay above that line and make sure his focus is all on football. He missed the Auburn game this last year and missed some other time as well. If he can stay on the field, there’s a chance he could be an impact.
- If Blades is as good as advertised, there’s a chance that three veterans are fighting for one starting spot. He would be a junior just like Renfro. If Renfro wins the spot, he could be a special player at A&M.
- He had a really good spring. Renfro would be on my list among the most improved players from the spring to now.
- I think any of those corners could do it. That’s what’s interesting today, just a few days into fall camp, to call your shot on who would start at corner would be just an educated guess. I will say, you would have a hard time even Linguist or Elko to say who is going to start for them at cornerback.
- There will be days that Renfro will go out and give those A&M receivers really hard days. If you want to see which of these defensive backs are ready, just look at who is making life hard for the A&M wideouts. If the defensive backs are locking them up, shutting them down and frustrating them, that’s a really good sign.
