Recruiting Country: The latest recruiting news surrounding the Maroon & White

TexAgs Recruiting analyst Ryan Brauninger joined this morning for another edition of Recruiting Country, highlighting the latest news and notes from the recruiting trail as we shift focus to 2023 and look back on some key moments from the class of 2022.

Key notes from Recruiting Country

  • I think that the Orange Bowl was the birthplace of the class of 2022. When Jimbo went to homes after that win, he was no longer selling 'look what we can do,' but instead 'look at what we just did.' That's why it was vital for me to include that on my list. I think it will be a fun piece of content to follow as it rolls on.

  • On my original list, I know I didn't have the event that I put at No. 9. But, my conversation with Jason, and the facts that he presented, showed me that it needed to be there. June 18 was a weekend that Jimbo Fisher was having one of his football camps on campus. There were only five official visitors, and they ended up signing four of the five that were on campus in the class of 2022. That included, of course, the head-to-head win over Texas when they ultimately earned the signature from Kam Dewberry‍. The weekend also had a direct payoff when they received a commitment in the following days from Martrell Harris‍.

  • It's also evident that was the weekend where the groundwork was laid with Gabriel Brownlow-Dindy‍. It's obvious to me that they do not flip him from Oklahoma in December if they don't knock it out of the park with Dindy in his family on that weekend in June.

  • Today's piece talks about an entity that is huge for Texas A&M throughout the entire process. Be on the lookout for that article this afternoon.

  • Lebbeus Overton‍ and his brother, Miciah Overton, are both currently looking for schools. LT's older brother was a rotation player at Liberty and is now in the transfer portal. You saw schools like Oklahoma and Oregon offer him a scholarship in recent days. I'm curious, is that recruiting or desperation?

  • I haven't explicitly heard that they want to play together, so it will be interesting to see how this plays out. Who knows what Miciah's goals are for entering the transfer portal. Does he want to play football more or play with his brother? It'll be fascinating to follow.

  • The big news on the recruiting trail recently in 2023 was Anthony Hill‍ announcing his top schools, and including Texas A&M. He is an elite linebacker prospect, probably the best I've ever covered in the State of Texas. However, I saw him run a 60-yard TD out of the wildcat against College Station High. He's a great linebacker, but a great athlete as well.

  • Rueben Owens‍ is a throwback kind of running back in my eyes. He runs out of a SLot-T there at El Campo and is just an elite running back. Though he doesn't do it much for the Ricebirds, I think he will be great catching the ball out of the backfield. I've seen him do it recently on the 7-on-7 circuit. From what I've heard, this will be a recruitment that Jimbo Fisher takes a heavy personal stake in, like we've seen the head man do a few times each cycle.

But Perkins is a total head case. Hill has to be a must get for us in 2023. The greatest position of need on the team IMO.
