The anatomy of a camp quarterback battle with former QB Jake Hubenak

Former Texas A&M quarterback Jake Hubenak joined Friday morning's edition of TexAgs Radio to go inside a fall camp quarterback battle and share his thoughts on what it's like competing to be QB1 for the Maroon & White.

Key notes from Jake Hubenak interview

  • It's the best quarterback battle I remember in a while, even when I was there. Billy Liucci on the Loochador Podcast had me convinced on each one. It's going to come down to fit and what Jimbo wants the offense to do. Haynes King is so dynamic in the way he can run, and he throws the ball really well. Max Johnson has experience, accuracy and is sneaky fast. Conner Weigman is electric and is a guy that. Either this year down the road, you can't keep that guy off the field. Competition breeds excellence.

  • Talking fit, if that receiver room comes along as it's supposed to, what Max offers as a whole, he's a Mac Jones fit. He can get the ball to the playmakers. Jimbo knows best, and we're going to trust his decision.

  • People know me better from the Alabama article than from playing quarterback. So many people wanted to know the behind-the-scenes look at what really happened. When I transferred, I had to go to a junior college before another D1 college. That gives a sneak peek of what coaches have to manage now with the transfer portal. That's another challenge. If Conner starts, how do you keep the other guys here and happy?

  • What stands out about Zach Calzada is his toughness. He battled through so many injuries. For him to battle the way he did, we will be appreciative of the year he had. I wish him all the best, except for one game this upcoming year.

  • My first snap was against Ball State. Running out of the tunnel and growing up an Aggie was special. The first meaningful snap I took was against Ole Miss. We were down two touchdowns and backed up on the 1-yard-line. The following year, my first start at Kyle was pretty special.

  • With what that defense was, they'll carry us as the offense develops. Hopefully, against Miami, we’ll put up big numbers, and it's a big recruiting weekend.
