QB1: Haynes King named starter for season-opener vs. Sam Houston

For the second consecutive August, Haynes King has won the Texas A&M quarterback competition.

According to TexAgs’ co-owner and executive editor Billy Liucci on Saturday, King — a third-year sophomore from Longview — has won the starting role over LSU transfer Max Johnson and five-star freshman Conner Weigman.

A&M opens the 2022 season on Sept. 3 against Sam Houston State. Kickoff is 11 a.m. CT at Kyle Field.

Last year, King beat out Zach Calzada for the starting job. However, he sustained a broken leg on his sixth snap of the second game of the season — a 10-7 victory over Colorado.

King, who played sparingly as a freshman behind Kellen Mond in 2020, has completed 24 of 39 passes for 359 yards and three touchdowns in his career.

He has also rushed for 67 yards on 12 attempts.

King’s running ability might have given him an edge in the competition. He’s reportedly one of the fastest players on the A&M roster. That speed figures to make the Aggie offense more versatile.

Also, Fisher’s offense reportedly is quite complex and difficult to master. King is in the third year in the system, while Johnson and Weigman have only been learning it for a few months.
