During Tuesday morning's edition of TexAgs Radio, former Texas A&M quarterback and tight end Jamie McCoy joined to offer his thoughts on the Maroon & White's 31-0 victory over Sam Houston on Saturday as the Aggies began the 2022 season on the right foot.

Key notes from Jamie McCoy interview

  • I'm not too concerned with the offensive line. I think it was more of a scheme thing. It was shotgun right and shotgun left. If we have to put a full back or tight end back there, I'm not opposed to it. I'd like to see Devon Achane follow a block rather than just having a sweep left or right. We kind of catered to Sam Houston and made it too easy for them to stop the run.

  • I think Haynes King closed the game well, but I hate we had that weather delay. I know at points, it seemed like he had it made up in his mind that he was going to a certain receiver. On some of those, it was like he didn't see the safety baiting him into those throws. The thing with quarterback is that you have to take what the defense gives you. If it's a check down, throw the check down.

  • Ainias Smith is a jack of all trades. One thing I love about him is his lack of fear in the return game. Sometimes guys might be right in his face, and at some point, that's going to help us because he can pop one. He could possibly be in the backfield with Achane. The fact that he can do everything, you have to love having a guy like that in his back pocket.

  • You can only do what you can and control what you can control. If you get the ball with two guys around you, that's all you can do. I'm not too concerned about Achane's day. I know he wanted to start right and get into some Heisman talk. The running is going to happen. We have to be a good running team. Jimbo wants to be balanced, and the run is going to come. I just see it as we're holding onto some of our cards to use later in the season.

  • I liked Evan Stewart. He looked really good to me. Fadil Diggs jumped off the screen, and he was everywhere on the field. Chris Marshall got out there and made some plays too. There were young guys in the game early, and then some older guys like Moose Muhammad were making plays too.

  • From week one to week two, it's a big change. In camp, you've been going against each other and not wanting to hurt your guys. When real bullets start flying, you have to get your feet wet. You know what's going on, and you know the game plan. You can make the big jump because the season is not new anymore. I'm looking to see a big jump this week.

  • Making all pieces work, once you get the running game going, that helps your defense because they're resting on the sideline. It helps the special teams too. Having an offense that can eat the clock and a defense that is elite, that's special. Once the run game picks up, that's when we will start living up to our ranking.

  • I cannot wait to see what happens in Austin this weekend. They're going to get a taste. I think they're going to get thumped. Alabama is going to come in there and beat them down. It'll be all Alabama. I think Quinn Ewers is in for a rude awakening. He has all the hype around him, but he's about to see what a real, quality SEC team looks like. They get a chance to see what they're coming into. We'll see if they can stand up to the test after all the Twitter talk they've been doing over the years.
