Week 13's Overnight Sensation: Conner Weigman, Quarterback

Each Monday during the 2022 Texas A&M football season, we’ll identify a first or second-year Aggie player who delivered an exceptional performance over the weekend and earned the distinction of being the week’s ‘Overnight Sensation.’

The man, Weigman.

Texas A&M ruined LSU’s bowls of cereal and playoff dreams with a stunning 38-23 win on Saturday night at Kyle Field, and once again, true freshman quarterback Conner Weigman took the field as the Aggies beloved QB1 and delivered.

Weigman completed 66.7 percent of his passes (12-of-18) and threw for 155 yards. When the quarterback was not slinging it downfield, Devon Achane torched the LSU’s run defense to take care of business on the ground.

It is safe to say that when Weigman has time, the true freshman can deliver dimes. In what may have been the offensive line’s best game all season, Weigman had time to check down his receivers and make accurate throws.

To start the fourth quarter, receiver Moose Muhummad made an eye-popping one-handed grab for a touchdown, but do not overlook how perfectly placed Weigman’s throw was. I don’t know if you could have scripted it better.

Beyond that, Weigman can keep drives alive with his feet. Needing 12 yards, the signal-caller scrambled for just enough to move the chains in the second quarter. Weigman ended up finding Donovan Green for a touchdown catch to cap that march.

Weigman picked up his first SEC victory with an extremely efficient performance vs. LSU on Saturday night.

Only playing in five games and starting four, the freshman neared the 1,000-yard passing mark, finishing with 896 yards through the air in 2022. Perhaps the most impressive stat is Weigman did not throw a single interception on his 132 passing attempts this season.

#15 captures everything you want in a quarterback. Weigman has shown promise on all fronts this year as a runner and passer, but beyond the stat sheet, he is a leader. He waited his turn — knowing that two older quarterbacks stood in front of him — and watched his freshmen classmates take snap after snap. Unfazed, Weigman was more than ready when his number was finally called and played with a composure uncharacteristic of a freshman.

He has presented himself as dependable and resilient, and it is quite apparent that this group loves playing with Weigman under center.

Although the 2022 football season has come to a close, Aggie fans may not have seen the best of the two-sport athlete in his freshman season. We will have to wait and see if Weigman still plans on joining Jim Schlossnagle’s 2022-23 baseball squad.

Aggie fans have just seen their first go-round of ‘Weigman’ on the back of an A&M jersey, and there is so much more to come for #15.
