CBSSports' Dennis Dodd discusses recent conference realignment chaos
College football conference realignment talk has returned as Colorado us heading back to the Big 12, sparking discussion about the future of the Pac-12. Dennis Dodd of CBS Sports joined TexAgs Radio on Tuesday to share the latest news in conference realignment.
Key notes from Dennis Dodd interview
- I had not been to Nashville in a while, and it was a great site for SEC Media Days.
- This looks like D-Day. With everything else in the Pac-12, we aren’t quite sure. Apparently, there will be a deal. The number will be low. The angst now is which school, if any, will go to the Big 12 and possibly ruins the Pac-12. Arizona State and Utah do not have much leverage. Brett Yormark has said he wants 14. Are 16 teams too good to pass up for the Big 12 with Utah and Arizona State joining? I don’t know. Maybe not.
- I think there will continue to be a Pac-12, even if they lose three teams. They will add SDSU, SMU and a question mark. Do they want to stay in a wounded Pac-12 that, money-wise and perception-wise, does not measure up? The thing holding this thing together is the expanded playoff.
- With Oregon and Washington, the Big 12 does not want them because they are afraid that in three years they would go to the Big Ten. Nothing has been decided. The Big Ten is not expanding. They are the two best football brands. They are perceived as being a temporary member, so they will wait it out, which is so ironic.
- The ACC does not have anywhere to go. They have a 13-year contract left. Texas and Oklahoma left because they had three years to go and negotiated an out. The ACC has 13 years. There is no legal way out of it.
- Deion Sanders signed off on going back to the Big 12. They know what it's like playing in the Big 12. Colorado left in 2011 because of stability, and now, they are coming back in 2024 because it's more stable without Texas and Oklahoma.
- Jim Harbaugh said this is his Michigan's best team. Two straight college football playoffs. J.J. McCarthy is a year stronger. The offensive line has won the Joe Moore Award twice. They have everything. I would expect them to beat Ohio State and win the Big Ten.
- It looks like a rebound year for Texas A&M. Everything went wrong. The best thing that could happen was getting Conner Weigman on the field. Those receivers are impressive. Ainias Smith is coming back. It is year six under Jimbo Fisher. It will be hard to win the SEC West. There will be progression.
