SEC Network's Tom Hart voices opinions on the league following Week 1

Week 1 has come and gone, and SEC Network broadcaster Tom Hart is already digesting all the storylines from this weekend. The play-by-play extraordinaire joined TexAgs Radio on Monday to discuss his takes on Texas A&M, Alabama and more conference squads.

Key notes from Tom Hart interview

  • If you score a touchdown in each of your first five possessions, that will put you in a good mood.

  • You need a game like that to go into Miami. Who would you rather be, Texas A&M or Florida? Everyone in the SEC, generally speaking, put their best foot forward.

  • How about the running backs? Rueben Owens looked good. Don't look back. Don't be suckered into thinking it's just New Mexico. It's the way you do it. Half the teams that went out and played college football this weekend lost.

  • I haven't done a deep dive on Miami. This is a different A&M team, and they have different personnel. Go on the road and win a game on the road. It's a great test for them in many ways. I don't know where Miami will be at the end of the season. The fact that you have to go to their place makes it more difficult.

  • A great philosopher said, "No man steps in the same river twice." Everything changes. This a program that needed to put last year in the rearview. It may be the same names on the back of the jersey, but it's about restarting. Last year, this program was in the dumps and could not climb out of it. Sometimes, you have to hit the reset.

  • I hate talking about Colorado because they have one win. Deion Sanders wants the attention. Colorado is relevant because they have the right attitude and people. They have a "Why not us?" attitude.

  • LSU completely no-showed. Florida State is loaded with studs. Last year was supposed to be a building year for LSU, but they won a lot of close games and turned it into something special. Maybe they were a year ahead of schedule.

  • The Florida game didn't surprise me. Too many question marks. Kyle Whittingham had produced NFL players. The bottom line, Utah has a better roster than Florida. That has to be a concern for Gator fans in the SEC.

  • Jalen Milroe was sensationsal. Everyone will judge the quarterback on game day, but what happens behind closed doors? Tommy Rees said that is a significant part of the equation. Milroe won that job, and it looks like he has a firm grasp. Ty Simpson appears to be the third string. Milroe in practice was a little inconsistent. He barely missed on Saturday. He was extremely efficient. It would be really hard to go to another quarterback bc they need him to put up a lot of points.

  • How about JT Daniels at Rice? That guy has been to 17 different schools.

  • When you watch Texas and Alabama, the possessions will be limited. You have to value every possession. I'm curious to see how that plays out throughout the season.

  • I like Spencer Rattler. I just don’t see that South Carolina has the type of talent to hang in there every weekend. Both Georgia quarterbacks looked good, not brilliant. The middle of the pack in the SEC is where the coaches make their money. Collect those wins.

  • I have always been a Dave Aranda fan, and he has shown at times that Baylor is trying to be special. The Big 12 will be a good league. They will have momentum. Washington is one of my preseason teams to make it in the college football playoff.
