Maybe you are right. That said, I'm not the slightest bit ashamed of supporting that man. He loved our school and he's a good man.

Please define "good man". Thanks in advance.

Probably not the same as his ex wife's
ouch!

Now that we've hired a great defensive minded head coach, how can A&M best complement the efforts in the game day atmosphere?

It's true RC was not supported by the administration to make the necessary facility upgrades or pay enough to keep some really amazing assistants he found and developed. It's also true that recruiting had completely passed him by. Mack Brown came in and wiped the floor with him recruiting younger and younger kids. RC never knew what hit him.

My pops was a boomer, which makes me a gen xer or millennial to you (DOB 1980).

When you get older, young man, being a good man makes a difference.

Dear diary,
I'm an old fart, why do I keep writing to you? What was I saying?
Oh yeah, rc was a good man…

Dude, you are 43. That's not old. Not even close. Quit acting like you have any serious tenure in life, calling people "young man" in a derogatory sense as if you have submitted some mountain looking down on those below you.

This whole thread reads like a sad troll attempt, with how quickly you started going after posters.

I'm 43 as well, young man. Show some respect to our 5 more years of experience in life…

RC had run his course and it was time for him to go (when he was let go). Was Fran the right guy to replace him? Obviously not.

However, the main issue during RC's tenure that held him and the program back was the lack of funding to retain assistants and upgrade the facilities. If RC had got the funding that Sumlin and Gumbo had received, then the mid and late 90's would have seen very different outcomes year over year.

They did upgrade the stadium (The Zone), but it wasn't until 2001-2002 that they started construction on athletic facility/locker rooms. However by that time, the narrative that we were a fading program sunk into minds of many, we could never recruit up to OU/t.u. standards and pretty much played 0.500 football for all of the 00's. I believe we only had one top 10 recruiting class in the 00's and we had a hard enough time beating Tceh, much less competing for a conference championship. So, that was the cards that RC was dealt, and I don't know why people are excoriating him on here.

I loved RC. I was an undergrad 91-95 and we never dropped a home game until t.u. my senior year. We had all forgotten the lyrics to the 12th man song.

But two changes started to change things:
1) Mack Brown arriving at Texas. He immediately flipped recruits like Applewhite, and we could no longer keep our recruiting up with them.
2) End of SWC and entry to the Big12. OU and Nebraska, as well as Neuheisel's Colorado, really started to expose cracks in our team. Those cracks were already there, but only apparent in bowl games (like the Sugar Bowl against Ohio State).

I perceived a big shift...we were no longer playing to win & just blow the other guys off the field, rather we were playing to not lose & retain Slocum his job.

He also refused to fire his son when our special teams went to hell.

So it was time for a change. But we got hoodwinked into hiring Fran & things just went all kinds of downhill after that.

So multiple things can be true simultaneously:
- RC was a great coach for us in the early-mid 90s
- If not for sanctions placed on us by an OU homer, we might've played for a natty.
- Our facilities were falling behind, RC was trying to get attention to that & was ignored.
- Our AD was a great former football player, but not a great AD. See what Shelby Metcalf said to get fired.
- We were the big fish in the small pond of the SWC and that became apparent when going bowling and when the B12 came about.
