Jackie Sherrill discusses Texas A&M's offensive showing on Saturday

Week 1 is in the rearview as Notre Dame took down Texas A&M at Kyle Field, 23-13. Legendary head coach Jackie Sherrill joined Monday's edition of TexAgs LIVE to speak on what went wrong in Saturday's contest and how the Aggies can bounce back.

Key notes from Jackie Sherrill interview

  • I am a little disappointed, but there were some good things and some bad things.

  • Conner Weigman looked like he was not settled. He looked off. So much is put on the quarterback. The coaches yesterday probably spent all day trying to figure out where it went wrong at quarterback.

  • The defense played well enough. There were a lot of bright spots. They did not play well enough offensively to win.

  • The defense was one of the bright spots. The newcomers were able to create pressure and cover. I thought we played well upfront.

  • Offensively, Conner was not in sync with the receivers. There has to be reason for that. Conner's demeanor before and during the game did not seem like the same Conner we have seen in the past.

  • Usually, when you see a quarterback play like that, it is against a team that is much better than you. Sometimes, it is kind of like baseball, and your pitcher just can't find the strike zone.

  • You're asking yourself if you did enough heavy work in the offseason right now. After losing our running back, we probably backed off hard contact in practice.

  • Usually, every team improves from the first week to the second week. A&M should be a lot better offensively this week, and hopefully, we can find some answers.

  • It is not a sprint. We hired Mike Elko for a reason. Sometimes, it takes a marathon to win the race.

  • You have to consider bringing in another quarterback. That is probably one of the conversations the coaches are having. I am sure it will change if Conner is not improved. He did not have the same demeanor as when he first played at A&M.

Coach Elko needs to heed Coach Sherrill's advice on quarterback. Something is wrong.

Coach Sherrill excels at making observations that are accurate, and he is focused upon making improvements. I greatly miss him being on the sideline.

Coach Sherrill is always the best overseer catching the holes of a plan in action. He coached the Aggies onto the national stage. As a junior, I was at the texas game, he mentions, in Austin expecting to lose. No way... 37-12 ...the first of many years beating them..along with the last minute FG against SMU to win 19-17 He will always be held in the highest esteem... He should still be our coach, yes..at 80

My first home game as a student was Sherrill's first game as A&M coach. A 38-16 drubbing by Boston College. (Thank God the internet didn't exist back then). The 37-12 tu game was epic among countless other memories.

I have numerous games on VHS during the Sherrill era including the SMU game('85 season was especially damn fun). I need to look at getting them converted to digital assuming the tape hasn't degraded.

I'm pretty sure I have all my student ticket stubs.
