TEXAS SPECIAL, 1965

The Texas Special was a play devised by Texas A&M in 1965 against the University of Texas at Austin that involved a lateral pass and a 91-yard touchdown:

Tim Wilson's surprising 1979 13-7 win. The third deck wasn't completed so bought a scalped ticket in the first deck and as a freshman joined the fish cadets on the field and walked to the fish pond afterwards and watch d the spectacle and joined the yells…hardly practice for the first time!!!

I believe this is the only time both bands have been on the field together. I was a kid when I took this picture.

I was 5 or 6 years old. I was on the 3rd deck with my parents (my grandparents had seats on the 2nd deck), my baby brother was asleep in the baby carrier under the bleacher between my mom and dad. It was cold. I could see the game and I could see bonfire still burning on the polo fields. I think we won because they threw cotton at the end of the game. It wasn't my first A&M sip game, but it was the first I remember.

'87. It was loud as heck and we won the next game after that (Cotton Bowl v ND).

that's the last time the season ended with a victory over those vermin partnered with a win in the next game played.

1985 says hello.

Came to post '87.

Was young, but it is one of those childhood memories I'll never forget.

Cold night, extremely loud. Amazed at how loud everyone was and just the spectacle of things. Even the olds were standing, everyone was beating and stomping on the bleachers.

My most vivid memories of the tu game were from 1975. My seat was field level on temporary bleachers in the end zone. When the game ended, I remember looking toward the sip section where all that orange stood stone cold silent in disbelief as if frozen. I went down on the field and heard Ed Simonini exclaiming to Coach Bellard "We did it! We did it!". Quite different from the 1974 game in Austin.

2006- I was at home watching with family. This was my first win vs tu as an Aggie.

"Just get a first down Ags. First Down... TOUCHDOWN TEXAS A&M!"

My family which had thought that tu was going to win had to watch me celebrate. I was crying tears of joy after we won.

Favorite memory?

Even in a loss my favorite memory is playing an old rival in a big game and it not being them and they're whiny/fake fans.

1999. Admittedly didn't follow it much before about '97 or so, though.

A lot of mentions of 79 so I'll be corrected if I got the year wrong. Toward the end of a surprising win, two CTs sneak down and fire tu's cannon then run down the track wildcatting to cheers from the crowd. They got chewed out at the end of their exploits but heard later they got senior privileges for a week.

Past that, I remember the electricity in the air when I walked in before the 95 game. No matter what the naysayers say, this game was just special. We got outscored that day and there was a melee on the field afterward. Mutual hatred.

I was at the '84 game in Austin and that one was pretty sweet.

This. I had a case of BAS that season and was sure we were gonna lose. It was great to hear the silence of Memorial Stadium.

2006 at DKR with my sip father in law and my son (class of '20). McGee lead an 8 minute drive to secure the victory and upset. Memorial was silent except for the FTAB band. Beautiful.

1989

Aggie team lines up to sing the Spirit with the 12th Man during the pregame (as it should be). Horn players come out and get in their faces talking trash during the song. As soon as the last note was sung the Ass-whooping commenced as a major brawl broke out. Went on to win the game 21 - 10 and claim our sixth in a row over the sips.

'93 @ Kyle Field. I had been a stringer for the Batt (writing 2-3 articles a week on tennis, volleyball, etc. and making $5 per story) and got the call-up to varsity to cover the sip game. it was the freezing cold game with Leeland's kickoff return and Dennis Allen's INT.

I could write 10,000 words on the game, but the thing that has stood with me all these years is going down to the field in the last 5 minutes and being on the sideline as Shea Morenz was running for his life. He ran to the sideline but he didn't quite get there in time and Sam Adams hit him full force. The CRACK of one body hitting the other and Morenz being flung sideways was a staggering thing to see/hear up close.

'99 is #1 for me, but this one is a close second. Had seats one or two rows behind the FTAB.

More of this game. Freshman year, way up in the third deck, super cold, buddy had his flask to keep us warm. This was on the heels of spending all day at friend's apartment making Thanksgiving dinner since none of us went home (somehow no one got food poisoning). Wouldn't trade any of it.

Not sure of the year, 1979, '80, '81...we were playing the sips in Austin. My buddy that was with me had spent time as a trainer for the football team. He introduced me to a couple that were sitting behind us who happened to be Matt McCall's parents, who was one of our offensive linemen. During a play, a penalty flag flew, and behind me I heard "Oh, Matt!" I turned and asked what happened...his mother said "Matt held"- call on the field...holding, offense. Talk about being honed in on her son playing.

Matt McCall was a Fr. at A&M in 1987.

I was driving a '67 VW Bug back then. I parked it behind Reed McDonald and walked to the game. When I got back over there around midnight it wouldn't start. I slept in the Batt office that night.
