Texas A&M adds former Colorado DE Dayon Hayes via transfer portal

December 20, 2024

Pressure off the edge and the ability to create it is always a top priority around the SEC, and the Aggies received some good news as former Colorado defensive end Dayon Hayes has committed to Texas A&M.

A P4 defender with several years of experience, Hayes checks in at 6-foot-3 and 265 pounds. In an injury-shortened 2024 season, he posted 16 tackles, 3.5 TFLs and two sacks in four games.

Before his time in Boulder, he spent four seasons at Pitt and posted 45 tackles, 11 TFLs, and four sacks in 2023. He was a four-star recruit coming out of Pittsburgh (PA) Westinghouse in the class of 2020, and he has recorded 96 tackles, 25 TFLs and 15 sacks in his college career.

Hayes is the Aggies’ seventh addition from the transfer portal and the second addition on the defensive side of the ball.

Stay tuned. We’ll have more soon for our TexAgs Premium subscribers.

Whooop, definitely an area of need. Hopefully we'll add a few more to the DL.

Maybe this is the best we can get out of the portal but sorry my first thought is meh...
They got him from Pittsburgh for a season and now he's on the move again...tells me he's following money. Nothing wrong with that but not a great reason for him joining the ags.
I know Pitt football well enough that 4 sacks in a whole season is nothing to get excited about. And his 2 sacks at cu were against Colorado State

This is where we are with college football like it or not.

I don't like it for the record.

Before his injury, he did fairly well at CO; thus, I'm actually optimistic that Deon may have helped develop him a little bit, & as a result, I'm not gonna crap on the kid's potential sight unseen like many seem willing to do!

Yep.

Sweet, expect a FEW more DL transfers and hopefully some big time studs.

Tough portal game as you wanna snag the best guys ASAP BUT you know some CFP teams are gonna loss a bunch of top guys going for a bigger pay check.

Well A) he's a 5 tech for us. Not our edge rusher. Any sack he gets is a bonus. But he's coming mainly to set the edge in the run game, which he looks pretty good at.

B) he got hurt at Colorado. Not a great season? He was very good in run defense. Probably their best. The injury is a large part in why he's leaving. Deion isn't exactly patient

C) what about oregons latest dl commit? You think 4 schools in 8 years from Hs to college is bad, like Hayes is. Try 7 schools in 8 years including a couple different commitments in between. Yet the #1 team took him.

He's a very solid pick up, and the main concern is coming off injury. I have literally zero concerns with 3 schools in 3 years. That's becoming more and more common.

I follow CO and TAMU closely. Deion is setting the highest standard for managing the portal. Agree this dude was great until he got injured and Deion just moves on ...he is not patient at all. Elko is very similar to Deion from what I can gather in terns of evaluating talent and personality that fits with the team's personality.
SOLID PICK UP....MORE AND BETTER DL S TO COME ...TRUST ELKO

a mature player with loads of experience at a position of need with more time to add additional pieces. works for me. this kid will be a solid rotational player i expect them to add one more potentially higher level to this position group.

Can he set the edge in the run game? Or is he just an open gate like all the other DE's on the roster?

Maybe we got him for a low price? Who knows?? He's 24. Like the physical maturity of the older players. Remember when App. States O-line chewed up? They were all old

Haha is this guy for real. Have another look at his stats and get back to us on that garbage take. This is a great pick up. He's a grown ass man and had crazy stats prior to injury.
