This is Elko's defense. Just like it was Jimbo's offense. Elko's specialty is also defensive backs. My thoughts he's just going to get more involved with them if he was not already.

My main point was that it's his background and that group digressed so it would be surprising to me if he's not going to be more hands on moving forward with that group. It appeared he tried the CEO approach this year. His comments tell me that's not going to be the case this next year.

Bateman is a puppet/lackey. The defense is still Elko's.
Even the former wasn't the case, why should anyone be surprised that when we hired multiple coaches from one of the worst defenses that we ended up with a very bad defense?

Has OU fired Venables yet?

OP, while this topic is a valid opinion, I think it's important to consider that the head coach is an expert in this area(defense ) and needs some time to reflect on the season and rest before moving forward. Delete thread and just chill.

We need a new DC but that is not an excuse for poor defense next year because we got a new coach….. because you know that's what Texags will say if the new coach sucks as bad as the prior one. Rinse and repeat.

Tend to agree with this, doubt Bateman gets fired. He's still a decent recruiter and that's a tough precedent to set. But Elko has to take over the defense. Sucks for him but he's painted himself into a corner with his defensive staff. Gonna have to rely on his GM more than ever. Wouldn't be surprised to see a couple coaches "find new jobs" like our co-DC and db coach (safety play is just atrocious). We have NFL talent along the DL (draft will confirm), but that unit got worse as the season rolled on. It's not all on the players either. These UF rejects seem to have our guys playing down to their coaching level. The defense is a total wreck at season end.

And don't look now but UF finished the season on a 4 game winning streak, finished with the same record and significantly harder schedule. Yes Lagways experience helped but their whole team played hard and improved while ours went the other way.

Well the first thing I would say on the gators improving it's Napier's 3rd year there. That's a big difference than a coach in his first season. That's typically the big year for a new coach at a place bc everything is clearly his and is either looking on the up swing or not. It took Sark three years as well at Texas.

Scooby was hardly a reject.

Now Hill was a liability in pass coverage, but Scooby was good.

Remember 2021 at Baton Rouge? We had the game won. We were destroying Johnson with the rush. We quit rushing until LSU was in scoring position, then sent a blitz and left the db on an island. We lost. That was Elko.

Oh, maybe we need to teach db's when it's a good situation in which to hold. We could have used that Friday night.

Easily win ND if QB is not a head case. Apparently no one saw him being a head case was on option. Then having to manage that one all season set the offense up for failure. To start off 7-1 with that item and overcoming Jimbo's offense the past two years was surprising to me. The O line was looking great until hit with multiple injuries.

Moss goes out and team was not ready for it. Could not move the ball against USC in second half. USC is a playoff team. Only reason they are not is bc of SEC officiating.

WR room was average this year. Recruiting and portal this year looks very promising to a major upgrade in this position.

Klein was saught after by both Notre Dame and Penn State. He picked A&M.

Everyone is over reacting to the Texas game. And I get that one. It was bad one highlighted by very key 4th down plays. The play calls were bad.

The few times we did hurry up this year we moved the ball. My question, why was this not done more. Is this a Klein thing or Elko driven. I'm hoping this one changes next year.

My guess is the offense will be the strength of the team next year. I'm more concerned with the defense.

Only his coordinator hires and losing 4 straight games is proof of that, but maybe he's less stubborn than he seems and can adapt like he always claims to be able to do - even if it's not evident beyond the LSU game.

You still need a great offense. And i agree that Bateman sucks and needs replacing to help out Elko, and that Elko greatly overestimates his own self.

Gabe bronlow dindy is trying to dunk on Bateman now that he is has left in the transfer portal. I agree with his sentiment, but GBD needs a reality check on his sour grapes. Every one of his brothers had the same bad coaching and development that he did but he still couldn't crack the 2-deep rotation as a 5 star recruit in his third year. Sorry you got injured bud, but maybe you just ain't that good either

The last 3 years under Jimbo we averaged 28th in total defense. That is not elite. In fact with the talent we had I would say that is very poor.

Elite is being consistently in the top 10. An Elite defense does not let a little team like App State control the ball the entire game and rush for close to 200 yards!

So 75% of $7 million is $5.25 million on top of roughly $7 million per annum for buying out Jimbo!!!

We really have to get rid of him. His resume is very sub par and our defense was absolutely atrocious this year. We can do much better with our money and resources.
