How far away we are from competing at this level.

I think Elko will get us better...but man we aren't even close to what Ohio State puts out here.

ND next year will be a massive test.

But Ohio St couldn't beat Michigan on their own field this year, just sayin...They got hot at the right time, just like we could do if we can keep our key players healthy.

Not with the NCAA formula. They don't want anyone in the final four of the playoffs who are not traditional blue blood programs. If Ohio State had lost 3 games in the season, the NCAA would have bent over backwards to get them in the 12 team playoff.

TCU, SMU, Indiana, and Boise State found a way to get in. If you win enough, you'll get there.

They didn't play tough schedules and showed once in the playoffs.

Chip Kelly definitely got their offense rolling at the right time .

I will get chastised heavily for this for sure but we aren't really that ridiculously far off imo. Is there an athletic margin to be made up … yes. Is it really ginormous … not so sure . Maybe ten good players and some good
Luck on the injury front.

Ready to take my beating now.

How did that work out for them? How many people even remember they were in the playoffs?

we are probably just a handful of players away, but probably very far away as far as coordinators go. if we get better play calling from our coordinators, we probably win 2 or 3 more games than what we did this year. easily could have been 11-2 with the bowl game. crying shame.

College football national championships are not what they used to be. You can have multiple losses, and don't even have to be good enough to win your conference.

This gives Aggies hope!

When SMU and Indiana combine for 8 wins next year and their fans finally concede that this year was a culmination of historically easy schedules and some luck, everyone will forget the nightmare where we had to pretend they deserved to be in the playoffs.

Didn't work for Alabama.

You're right about what their goal WAS -- which is why they kept it at 4 teams for so long, but when they went to a REAL playoff, it pretty much is out of their hands.

There was no bending over backwards. Everyone who really had all the information went from "no way" when they saw the teams to "well, the teams were pretty much correct, but the seedings were off" to "really, if you correct one or two and the byes, everything lined up about right." Those that didn't arrive at the last one were either incredibly biased or too emotionally involved to admit that they got this about 95% right. The format screwed the teams with a bye, and that was pretty much it.

Incidentally, if you're one of the ones that went ape**** about Indiana getting a bid, then count yourself in with the folks in the NCAA you're complaining about. You can't have it both ways.

They took advantage of the schedule they had to accomplish something we have not. In the last decade SMU and TCU have more 10 win seasons and conference championships than we do. Maybe we should beat the teams we're supposed and all this would be a moot point.

To be fair, we were like 2 point favorites on the road against SC and Auburn. We were a flawed team that played above average for the first 2/3 of the season. Reality caught up with us when the sun went down on the road.

The solution is easy, in words.
It's just easier said than done.

Create a program and a staff that's built to recruit, retain, and develop players that attract the attention of every NFL evaluator out there.
And when you get to the point of putting 10-ish players into the NFL Draft every year with consistency, at that point you're pretty close.

That's what the true contenders are doing.
By comparison, we typically put in about 3-ish.

I remember TCU playing in the CFP National Title Game two years ago after they beat Michigan in the semi finals.

Wait - so ND gets to the final in year three with a six year senior and OSU gets there with a bunch of graduate student players and you think A&M or for that matter any team is far away.

CFB - Playoff is pretty easy to make
CFB - Champion is just a bit more expensive

A&M - O-Line sticking around
WR - Hiring the best it can find and 1 Track Star Recruit
RB - Senior level players
QB - Third season

DL - Adding what it can find
CB - Hiring the best
LB - Holding the seniors and graduate student

I don't thin we are far from CFB Playoff and could easily beat ND early as that team will not be there next season.

Every season in CFB is now is finding out what the portal players can do and how they fit together as a team.

Agreed, not saying we would have made the playoffs, but a healthy Moss and Owen would probably have been worth two more wins.

And the Lions got absolutely smoked at Home and those guys are adult professionals

OSU was the better team and likely wins that game 2 out of 3 times
The nicest thing about the new playoff structures in everybody has to win 4 games in a row against legitimate completion ( teams that got Byes won their CCG ) OSU was very good down the stretch and beat the Ducks, Vols & Irish convincingly

That TCU team was legitimately pretty good.
The following spring that had 9-ish kids drafted by NFL?
They weren't built to sustain it, didn't have the depth thru the team. And it showed vs UGA.
But that one year, it all came together.

Meanwhile we tend to hover around 3-ish draft picks.
And we wonder why we tend to stay in that 8-4 range??

Maybe we'd have squeaked in.
But we would have been outmatched vs the top teams.
A stacked roster matters, with multiple experienced players that are either NFL draft caliber or maybe right on the fringe.

We don't have that yet.

I've said this many times and always causes a meltdown, especially on premium. People need to lower their expectations and just enjoy the season knowing we will be 8-4, 7-5 most years. We are so far away from competing, it's sad.

And yet they lost 2 games . Granted , they got their act together later in the season and reached their potential but still lost to Michigan late in the reg season. Michigan was a hugely flawed team offensively.

My biggest take away watching the play-offs is how much more creative and versatile the offenses are compared to us. I know there is a hundred variables as to the why, but it's clear we lack the innovation at the moment.
