It's the dorks who always talk about "7 wins" or "8 wins" or "6-6" who bewilder me. I am definitely not sure any of these nerds played organized football in their life thru HS. Saying how many wins you think we'll have in a negative way isn't something a football person contributes to in a conversation like this postgame.

Supposedly, Premium game threads are worse than the Zoo. Both are outlets for curmudgeons and trolls to spread grief from their personal lives. Pretty sad really...

No huddle isn't up yet (thx in advance Woodland), but I watched the 10 min highlight reel this morning. There aren't enough highlights to judge the continued porousness of the OL, but enough for some defense observations.

1. Onyedim is the best athlete amongst the DT rotation. He's also not consistently physical. He junks and swims himself out of fits. He eliminated himself on at least two big runs.
2. Regis is the best DT, and while I love Regis, this statement is a problem for the prospects of the defense.
3. Hicks. Oh boy. Dude's feet are stuck in mud. He looks more like a three star plugger in his fifth year than a former five star.
4. Howell. NFL athlete off the edge. Poor discipline in fits. If he cleans up the fits, he'll end up a top three round pick, maybe late first.
5. York. Yikes. He launches himself at ball carriers and just guesses at run fits. Middle backers often look awful when the DL is undisciplined, but I'm not inclined to give York the benefit of doubt when it looks the same as the prior three years.
6. Scooby. Most dynamic defender. Excellent athlete while also willing to be physical. He might be a pro.
7. Secondary. Lee can't set an edge. Ratcliffe is aggressive in a valuable way, but he's so, so easily ran out of a play AND doesn't change direction well. Anderson as a starter speaks to depth issues, IMO - he's slow and undisciplined. On a positive, the corners were actually on top of the WRs the vast majority of the night. Lee, Ricks, and Chappell were in tight coverage, but Mccown made some dime throws on slants and UTSA made tough contested catches.

Everything in the front seven was a problem. Secondary can cover, but can't tackle nor set contain. Defense looks finesse and undisciplined, which speaks to a coaching and prep deficit.

A few games into Jimbo's second season I declared him "not the guy" because the offense had no dynamism, I could predict the exact play about 50% of the time, and the team was undisciplined (full of penalties and technique failures). I'm not there with Elko, yet, but, he's suppose to be a defensive mensch and all I saw last night was a defense that was less physical than an AAC squad and had abysmal fit discipline. They looked poorly coached.

I think UTSA is better than most people think they are. We did beat them by 3 scores. Our O-line needs better consistency, and our D-Line needs to improve. But that Henry kid could play at any school in the nation. He just plays at UTSA. We will beat Mormon Aggie by 30+ next weekend and be in good shape to handle ND, who could get boat raced by Miami

Our pass D gave up only 121 yards to their starting QB, in an offense that is pretty good passing. And we didn't give up a passing TD until 14 seconds were left in the game, our backups vs their backup QB.

I don't think that's shabby. They were 11th in the nation in pass offense last year and 12th in total offense.

Sorry, but their QB is not very good. I suggest they had better receivers last year…..

Would give it a B-

The two WRs are electric and gonna be really fun this year. Some up and down from Reed but he seemed to play better down the stretch.

Defense……jeramiyah love is going to have a heisman coming out party in 2 weeks if the run defense doesnt figure it out

He is spot on and not new observations...it's the same crap from last yr. esp on York. If everyone goes and rewatches York, he guesses more often than not or just makes a very poor read / angle (coaches cover it up w the word 'fit'). York will make some plays, but he costs us a few plays in every game and has since he's been here.

The big run is the epitome of him guessing and Anderson's inability to read, adjust and then lackadaisical effort. That run play was almost exactly the same as ND's last year (same mistake by York).

Elko blamed that play on a 'kid who didn't follow the call and hadn't played much'. Not sure whom he's blaming yet, but he's not pointing a finger at York/Anderson (which should shoulder some of the issue).

It's worrisome that 2 of the more experienced players as they need to sit awhile and watch from the sideline a bit to wake them up IMO.

The Ostrich with its head buried in the sand is the official mascot of the TexAgs FB Board Sunshine Pumpers.

They know they saw a bad team struggle with an inferior opponent for 3 quarters until they just wore them down

But instead of acknowledge that they saw a team that is very unlikely to win even 8 games, they bury their heads in the sand and pretend that somehow every good team on the schedule didn't just get the easy blue print to beat us: run the ball on offense because we can't stop you and on defense, stack the box and force Reed to make passes longer than 10 yards. Do that and this team can be beaten easily every time.

In their pumper minds all these deficiencies can be explained away with lame excuses like UTSA are secretly a dark horse playoff team or that we were "saving the playbook for Notre Dame"

Lots of y'all in here have short memories. Elko defenses for us have always given up yards but just don't give up a ton of points. It's bend don't break. Go look at our seasons where he was DC... Yardage we gave up always looked ugly but teams just couldn't convert it to points. The d line struggled last night but after the one play in the second half, they figured it out and locked things down. That's still probably the #1 thing that has me worried when we get into our gauntlet of a schedule though. Pass coverage was much improved. Gave up a little over 100 yards through the air to the #11 pass offense from last year that returned all but one of their starters.

On the offensive side, we called a ton of pass plays because they were stacking the box on us. Last year all you had to do was stop our rushing attack and you would win, so that's what UTSA tried last night. Now that people have seen that Reed can actually throw and that we have two dangerous WRs, they'll spread out more and I think you'll see the run game pick up. Pass blocking was excellent.

First half was definitely frustrating but there was lots to be excited about here compared to years past. At least there are adjustments being made, which wasn't the case under previous coaching staffs.

A&M's athletic department budget is in the top 10 nationally. A&M may have been the biggest NIL spender this past year ($51 million). A&M only has one 10+ win season since 1998. No need to question the negativity.

takeaways:

(1) we rushed for 108 yards for the game
our opponent rushed for 373 yards for the game

(2) no one listens to a "disciplinarian" who looks like the pillsbury doughboy

(3) 'ole Sarge has never been a blimp lookin mascot

(4) when the hope-ium wears off, see number (1) above

(5) most champions don't "pull away late" from teams with no returning starters on one side of the ball.

The Pumpers here think CFB works like the pixies from Neverland and that it's the fans fault that our players drop wide open passes, overthrow, can't tackle and miss blocking assignments because we didn't believe in them enough and that if we would buy into the hype that this year will somehow be different then they'd play like Saban era Bama teams

Because we wanted to get Reed snaps? Honestly i don't know but if anyone watched the game or even just analyzed the box score and thought we actually tried to run the ball they may have some limited mental compacity.

My summary -

1 - Very disturbing, but not time to hit the panic button on the season.
2 - I thought we did better in the second half than the first, but looking at the stats by quarter they don't prove that (basically the same H2 as H1).
3 - Still not a fan of Reed, but has some good qualities. Not at all ready to say his downfield passing problem is fixed.
4 - Only bright spot is a notch up on skilled players.

In short - Very indifferent on this one.

If we are a "championship" caliber team, we should literally be rolling over teams like this and putting in second stringers by start of the 4th quarter (at least).

However, it is totally true that even the best teams can seem rusty and out of sync first games of the season. And UTSA is generally one of the better teams in C-USA. It's also true that good teams and coaches tend to use these games to evaluate their players, so remains to be seen what we do against ND and SEC teams. Also true that good coaches don't show all of the playbook in easy OOC early games.

To the doomsayers, I say jeeez.... can't take doom out of this. But agreed, yesterday did nothing to make me believe we have a chance to beat ND or the sips on the road this year. I am still at 8-4 at worst, still wouldn't be surprised at a 10-2. Total toss up as to which until I see us vs Utah State. If we just seem to be firing on all cylinders, dominate, put in second string by the 4th, then 10-2. If we see this again, 8-4.

I saw many of my thoughts reflected in comments herein. However, I didn't see anyone mention how low the extra point kicks were. Accurate but very low. I know it is a small thing but could cause problems at some point.
