That bogus holding penalty on our first drive

THAT is the kind of thing that separates the elite (with funding, talent, coaching, etc.) from the also-rans (who also have similar funding, talent, coaching, etc.).

That took a high-likelihood 7 points away from us. That was our scripted drive and everything was working as intended. If you want to speak concretely, say it robbed us of 6.3 points (7 points at 90% likelihood of success).

Put those 6.3 points back on the board and we walk away with the W.

Now our team played well and our coaches and analysts did their job and we got luck and overcame it. But make no mistake it about it, kids. That is exactly the kind of thing that our leadership needs to proactively eliminate.

In particular, if Trev Alberts watched that first drive and then looked in the mirror and said "wow I'm doing a great job here," he needs to be fired before midnight. If he's been on the phone non-stop since then putting pieces in place to prevent such a thing in the future, he deserves a pay raise.

We also win easily if we block on the opening punt

And the wide left 52 yd field goal, that apparently every op could have made.

You're both right, but you're talking about different things.

You're talking about legitimate on-field outcomes making a difference in the game.

I'm talking about off-field factors preempting on-field outcomes, always in favor of the so-called blueblood teams.

To be more concrete once again, neither of the events you mention had happened at the time of the bogus holding call.

Once you reach near-parity amongst the top 10-20 programs, on-field outcomes will always be close. And off-field factors will always tip the balance towards the anointed programs, and away from "pesky upstarts" like us. And if Trev Alberts is content with that he needs to be tarred and feathered.

Wasn't that like our second play of the game?

It was a really bad call.

When you have a blatantly homer crew all saying, yeah that wasn't holding, it was a bad call, a really bad call

And to start of the game? We just dont have room for **** like that in the game anymore. I do hope it gets attention

Especially when you consider KC dropped/didn't catch the long pass on the very next play. That hit him

I think we'd already gotten 1 or 2 first downs by then. Whatever we put in our scripted drive, it had ND on their heels and we were likely going to score. You can count on the first 1-2 drives of each game being scripted and well-practiced the week before the game. AIUI Bobby Petrino was the master of this. But the point is that a) it's a dependable element of the early game and b) they tend to either fail early (3 and out) or go all the way.

Again that's legitimate on-field happenings. KC is a stud and I'll easily overlook it, but I'm willing to bet that that pass was NOT the scripted drive, at least not at that distance.

I agree with you, OP. The chosen schools like ND get bailed out with those kinds of bogus calls to benefit them regularly. We don't.

Now, we got some calls later in the game, but they were good calls. The targeting call was textbook targeting, and we've had targeting called on us for much less. The defensive holding call on the last drive was called because it was so obvious they had to call it.

We don't get those phantom calls to disrupt our opponents' drives like ND and similar brands get. It's totally ****ing wrong and unfair, but that's the way it is and will always be.

Not crying. This was about as baldfaced as these kind of things get. I don't want to ruin your joy tonight, but this is a structural factor that has hampered Aggie football for decades. We were lucky enough and prepared enough to overcome it tonight. But this was probably our red-letter game for the entire season.

If we ever do [ride] our fanbase passion & NIL warchest into being a perennial power, we won't be able to prepare like this for every game. And we won't be able to count on luck like this every game. This kind of dialed-in handicapping will keep us from the SECCG. This kind of dialed-in handicapping will keep us out of the CFP many years.

It's OK if you're not willing to take up the mantle, or even acknowledge that this kind of f---ery goes on, that's fine. It's not your job. It's the AD's job.

Enjoy the W, fella!!!

Unfortunately, SEC officiating is so bad it makes it hard to disseminate a bad holding call in the first drive because there are so many others that they claim balance out. But no doubt the impact of that first one was to throw a week of game planning on its head.

No it was literally the second play of the game. First play was a 12 yard run for first down. Then Concepcion dropped a bomb, Reed almost threw a pick, Craver has a 10 yard catch, and we got a punt blocked for a TD. ND was not on their heels ever on this drive and we were never even close to scoring lol
