Well ya if he wins 8 games again we have nothing to worry about. But if he gets to the playoffs or better, and if a blue blood or two need coaches, a $7 million base contract with incentives isn't going keep him here.

He'll be paid among the best once those incentives kick in.
And someone else will just offer those as guarantees to pry him away.
Who will that be? If he does good enough to be hired away the list is very short. And he won't necessarily view that opportunity as being any better than what he has here.
Penn State
Back to his roots, with a school and a fanbase that would back him tremendously well.
And currently with a head coach they'd love to find a way to get rid of.

Hia roots? He has exactly zero ties to Penn St. Nothing in the NY/NJ area where he's from compares to what A&M offers.
Also, Happy Valley has MAJOR recruiting challenges due to its remote location. All the logistics are harder to get recruits and challenges there vs college station, even though we aren't a major hub.

If he makes the playoffs he will have much better offers than what we are paying him. Likely from a couple of blue bloods.

When other schools start trying to lure Elko to their school A&M decision makers need to remember that the A&M job is a great job, tons of money, great facilities, great recruiting. We don't need to go into these situations scared.
Of course we should work to keep him, but don't make stupid contracts. A&M can always get another top level coach. Yes you will miss sometimes but we have the resources to get another great leader. Don't be scared!
We've been mediocre for 100 years. Who are all these great leaders you're talking about?

I'm not sure what your argument is here. Are you suggesting we should pull a Jimbo level contract extension for Elko if he gets us to the CFP?
Going back 40 years
Jackie Sherrill -excellent
RC Slocum -excellent
Fran- terrible
Sherman - not good but I do wonder what 2012 would have looked like with him
Sumlin - not good
Jimbo - appeared to be great hire, terrible contract extension, ultimately ended very badly
Elko - appears to be a great hire so far
A big part of the mediocrity that we had during many of these years was at least partially related to A&M unwillingness to really invest in the facilities and in the program in general. It seems we are committed to making this a winning program. If we can't keep Elko from going to some other place like Penn State or Notre Dame we can get another great coach. Hiring a new coach is always a risk, so you fight to keep your guy if you believe you have the guy, but you don't cripple yourself with a terrible contract.
Imagine if we let Jimbo go to LSU and promoted Elko from DC to head coach.

The last coach to leave TAMU for a "better job" was Bear Bryant. You have no idea what you are talking about. This job is every bit as blue blood as any other.

Imagine if we'd hired Urban Meyer instead of Fran.

That means he doesn't take the Utah job and wouldn't have kind of leverage he would have to take the Florida job. Would he even take the job given what our facilities were like in 2002?
