I think we we're #2 in AP poll week 1 of 1995 season? I also think we we're #1 in 1975 after we beat sips.?? Or, is this the highest ranking since 1939?

We were ranked #3 to start the '95 season and remained there until losing to Colorado in the third game of the year.

Based on the OP's username I'm pretty sure he is painfully aware of these details but thanks for bringing up bad memories.

We were #2 in '75 after we beat the sips and prior to losing to Ark.

Yep 1995.

Leeland McElroy was also a Heisman favorite.

I do remember! The Colorado game was an ABC 2:30 pm kick off and Keith Jackson was calling it. Most hyped game in recent history at the time. Leeland McElroy was the top Heisman candidate. If we beat Colorado we move to #1 and the we were predicted to breeze through the rest of the schedule. The perfect storm for a Natty. Well, about 6:00pm that evening I had some of the worst BAS in the history of following us. Still ranks in my top 5 BAS moments of all time.

I remember telling my wife we were going to win a Natty that year in the pre-season. She has basically never let me forget it either.

Doubly so after Lawrence Phillips broke into Scott Frost's apartment and tried to kill his ex-girlfriend.

Tom Osborne's reaction of not throwing Phillips off the team was the beginning of the end for his time in Nebraska.

This was the game where RC burned 2 timeouts on a two-point conversion and Rick Neuheisel admitted after the game that neither of the formations was real, he just wanted to confuse A&M.

Mission accomplished.

Before we beat the sips. A&M was #2 and cow was #5.

OP was asking about our ranking the week after we beat them. We were #2 as I said. Yes, we were #2 the week prior as well; but that wasn't the question.

And Koy Detmer went down early only to have an unknown local QB by the name Hessler come into the game and beat us

That loss was recoverable from if certain things went down later in the season. But it was the next game that not only ended the dream, but it also basically signaled to the other schools in the region that the Ags had peaked. Stupid loss to Tech where Zach Thomas returns an INT for the winning TD with under a minute to go in Lubbock. That was Horrifying levels of BAS.

Was that the darn game where Brandon Mitchell had a sack and there was a clear fumble and recovery by the Ags, only for the refs to say Tech QB was down?

Replays showed it wasn't even close. Should have been Ags ball and that would have changed outcome of the game. That's one of the plays that still upsets me.

I might have years or player mixed up but we lost to Tech one year when we got hosed on that sack fumble call.

Pullig couldn't believe how open one of his receivers was, and then realized it was Zach Thomas.

Yes. Yes, it was. I was sitting in the endzone seats where Thomas scored. That was the first year I went to an A&M Tech game, I've never see us win there. I made the '95, '97, '99, '01, '03, '05, and '07 games. Then I stopped going. We won in '09.
