I wondered about this when the first NIL deals started happening. There is not enough talent in the country to go around for everyone to be as as successful as they expect to be. Alumni are not going to continue to give giant chunks of money buying players and not getting the results on the field.
FSU, ut, Wisconsin, Auburn, etc .have given massive amounts of money for players and coaches and have bad results.

As example ut barely beat a last place UK team yesterday.
They will probably lose 2 or 3 more games after having the largest payroll in all of college. The qb will probably go to another team next year and some top talent leaving for nfl or other teams. No one good wants to stay on a bad team. And they will fire Sark.

Spending giant sums of money on coaching and players will not guarantee success on the field for many teams.

I think this is a good observation and also why we need to be prepared to extend/increase Elko's contract before he "does something". The fact of the matter is everyone is trying to buy upside and potential, it's really all you can do. Hypothetically, if we don't pay Elko, someone else will because there aren't enough proven winners.

To me it feels a lot like the speculative side of stocks/company evaluations. Elko might be worth X today, but we need to pay him 1.5x based on expectation of future success. If we don't, someone else will. Same holds true for all coaches who have shown upside but not "done anything".

Consistency is what schools need to focus on. You build a program you can be proud of and hope for seasons where it all comes together. Some seasons it just fails. Other seasons the stars align and you are 7-0 with several close wins and sitting at #3.

Florida, Auburn, Miss St and Arkansas are all good teams having a tough season but could easily be Top 10 with a couple breaks. Maybe not State… but they aren't complete trash.

Everybody keeps mentioning Elko for these job openings but more likely wouldn't a few of these teams risk it on CK?

You had better be able to get guys to play above their talent level. Not that it wasn't necessary in the past, but developing talent seems like it's going to be extra critical moving forward.

It's the same as it's always been. Evaluated talent and have a reputation for developing guys to be drafted early in the NFL and you'll dominate. NFL money is SO much bigger than NIL money..

In most cases nfl money is bigger than nil.
But not in Archies situation. He better save what he is making this year because he will never make that in the NFL.

I think coaches salaries are going to have to stagnate because to win going forward you will the money for players. When that happens, we will finally reach a new equilibrium point. IU is going to regret paying what they did for their coach- we are familiar with this concept.

For IU contract it depends on how it is structured.
Been stated he got an 8 yr extension at an average of $11.6m for a total of $93m.

If only a small portion of that is guaranteed, and not due within 60 days than it most likely is more palatable to the Athletics budget.

If its all guaranteed and due upon termination then it could hurt the Athletics budget.

To me this is really the first big extension in NIL era, lets see how smart or dumb IU really is.

I think for the first time in forever we have a coach and AD who realize this. Get guys into the league and the rest will fall into place.

Counterpoint. OSU bought the team that won the national title just last year.

This exact sentiment has been said of

Fran after taking us to the Cotton Bowl (for the first time in over a decade) in his second year

Sumlin after one season of JFF made him appear more than he was

And Fisher when Covid struck in year 3, but never managed more than 8 wins after that in the next 3

Nope. It doesn't. It is a prerequisite.

All it can do, is buy you a shot at success. And it's necessary.

Yeah….. and the difference with Elko is that he wasn't some big flashy hire. But, no one knows the future

it doesn't matter. He can do that, and still go if he wants.

Let's just hope ATM is providing him with the things he wants both for himself and what he thinks he needs to win to not want to leave.

My point was that there is going to be many teams with little to no success for alumni to continue to pay players such as has been done recently.

They will have to keep on paying if they want to complete.

Just like we are and have.

As crazy as things have gotten, does anyone else wonder if there will come a time when a school holds the coach to his contract if he wants to leave early for a different school.

Does anyone think the contract payout to leave will ever equal the contract buyout?
