What people need to remember is the playoff is not about picking the 12 best teams.
There is no reason for an SEC team to schedule tough non conference teams like ND or Ohio State. Aggies would have been ranked 3rd going i to last night if they beat a lesser nonconference team and tu would be going to playoff if they did. My guess is it is better for your team financially and football wise to make playoff than schedule a money maker nonconference game

Last night sucked but we're going to host a beatable team in the first round of the playoffs. We control our destiny. I don't think we're good enough to win it all unless Reed finds his zen zone for the next 4 games, but we could definitely win 1 to 2 games which would be a great season.

I'd usually say that they have no shot of getting in, but ESPN will definitely want Manning in the playoffs. If I had to guess, Utah or BYU will get screwed out of a spot in favor of sip sneaking in.

Miami winning big over Pitt pretty much killed any hope of horns slipping in
While hindsight is probably the better way to look at quality wins vs. losses, college teams evolve during the year much more so than the pros. A&M is certainly a CFP worthy team, but its schedule in hindsight doesn't look nearly as challenging as it did in the moment; having split the only two games it played vs. teams currently ranked in the top 25. Texas' record likely would have been better had it not gone on the road vs. #1 and #4 ranked teams. Florida is a bad blemish, but also on the road. The CFP will probably take into account that the game vs. Texas was a road trip to a hostile under-ranked rival. A&M most likely moves to #8. Texas moves up to #12.
Texas will miss the CFP. A&M will host a first round game vs. #9. Note: Nothing beats the atmosphere of a home playoff game. For the budget conscious fan, it doesn't get any better than that as a consolation.

With a 9 game SEC schedule next year a lot of good teams are going to get left out. Does anyone really think BYU would beat any of the top SEC teams? Any of them? Why reward the 2nd place ACC or B12 team unless they play a legit big boy out of conference? Beating TCU and W Virginia shouldn't get you any brownie points. Either play someone real of stay home.
