If Lane had any class and commitment to his Ole MIss players, he would have told LSU "talk to me after the playoffs....if you don't like that, then I'm happy with my extension at Ole Miss". Instead, he threatens the Ole Miss administration that he'll pull his staff immediately if they don't let him coach the playoffs. Then he tells is offensive staff, you either get on the plane with me to LSU today, or you're not coming to LSU. Why would he do that to the players? Because it's all about him. So yeah....I blame Lane. The system may be bad, but he didn't have to play his hand like that.

Nobody acts with integrity or does the right thing any more. There is no social or cultural pressure to respect agreements or follow the written or unwritten rules.

People like Kiffin get away with it because social media rewards asshattery ... for every individual excoriating Kiffin, there is someone else who is supporting him, either because they are LSU fans, media *****s, connected to CAA in some way or just plain idiots.

The people who say "if you got a job offer you'd leave too" ignore the fact that millions of people change jobs every year without publicly destroying their old employer's competitiveness. There is a right way and wrong way. Kiffin was already making what, $9 million a year?? That's not enough to do the right thing?

How much money is enough if you're rich and have community for your family. or just about being the richest or winningest coach

defending Lane Kiffin is like a sociopathic red flag lmfaooo

getting triggered due to a coach moving from one school to another not much better

Lane Kiffin becomes the first coach to lead his team to the playoffs and not coach them in the playoffs. I understand that the calendar in College Football is the biggest problem because the playoffs, National Signing Day, Transfer Portal are all l within the same month time frame. The national signing day and transfer portal should be moved to January. But Lane Kiffin handles this transition very poorly. He made public statements about staying present and not making decisions based on money, only to later leave for a more lucrative job at LSU, which drew a backlash from Ole Miss fans who felt misled. I am not surprised that Ole Miss Athletic Director Keith Carter refused to let Kiffin coach them in the playoffs because of concerns about the distraction and conflicting loyalties,

I don't know why anyone is blaming him.....everyone created this situation.

  • Players wanted NIL and transfer portal
  • Schools / fans with big money donors love the transfer portal to get top talent cause they like winning
  • Smaller schools or non-blue blood (i.e. Tech) are now more relevant
  • Players like getting paid big money every year even if it means transferring
This is like youth sports today. It's year-round. Non-stop. Parents complain about tournaments every weekend and out of state.... $500 baseball bats...blah blah....but they all feed into it.

To quote a wise philosopher..."Don't hate the player....hate the game."

Ummm. He quit on Tennessee after one year to go to a "better job" at USC. This was all before NIL ever existed. He was a famous flameout as a nepo baby hire with the raiders. He just made a made an ESPN special where he boo-hoo'd about how Ole Miss was so special and that they saved him. Then he tried to bully Ole Miss into letting him finish the season while he raided the staff and roster while he recruited for his real job.

Somehow, there needs to be an agreement you can't "tamper" with coaches until after.the season. And there needs to be more thought given to the timing of signing days/portal.

The door is open to way too many shenanigans as the playoffs get under way.

The conferences will have to lead the way because the feckless NCAA will never manage any meaningful change.

Lane's sin is that he didn't try to win.

He is right about this.

But Kiffin is an enemy.

All these former coaches and others supporting Kiffin who are also beholden to either Sexton or ESPN are laughable. Even Saban has been tainted by his relationship to Kiffin. Hell, Saban pulled the same sheet with LSU, the Dolphins, and Bana. Liars love liars. Kiffin IS what he's always been. And so is Saban (despite the fact that he is the greatest college football coach ever). Birds of a feather …

Schlossy and Kiffin are pretty similar. Neither has won anything. And both abandoned a great team, one during a national championship best of three and the other with an 11-1 playoff team, probably dropping them a few spots by insisting the staff quit too. The Committee could drop Ole Miss down to a first round road game with an unproven coaching staff taking over now. They did it to an undefeated Florida State.

I think this is a potential lawsuit when he was threatening to take his coaches with him if they didn't let him coach the team in the playoffs. Isn't that threatening tortuous interference with the assistant coaches that you have an agreement with if they don't give into your demands. That might not go over so well.

I'm not here to defend Lane, but the calendar is seriously screwed up. Why is the transfer portal open before the season ends? We've already had cases of players leaving before/during the playoffs because it was their only chance. This won't be the last coach.

Could we go back to an early February signing day for football, no December, and open the transfer portal the day after that? It seems like a sensible solution to me.

The transfer portal is in January, and that's the problem. As silly as this sounds, these guys are still college students, and have to be enrolled by a certain date. A team that is in the championship game risks losing players to the portal because the transfer window closes before the last game. The only real solutions are to move the start date of the season into mid-August, or get rid of spring practice altogether, and start practice on the first day of summer enrollment.

I guess you've never been there and interacted with their fans. Don't let the starched collars, fancy dresses, and crystal chandeliers at "tailgates" fool you, they're just as classless as any.

Same school that hired Chris Beard. They knew who they were hiring and tried to dress him up as someone better. But he's the same and they're the same. I don't feel bad for any of them. Just glad we didn't hire him back when I thought it would be fun to have him, prior to Jimbo. Dodged a bullet.

Come on. Lets not act like Ole Miss wouldnt have fired Kiffin in a second if he started to lose like Franklin, Stoops, Hugh, Kelly and every other coach that was fired this year. Lane was in a unique and enviable spot, he had multiple blue blood programs fighting for his services. It wasnt too long ago when no one wanted anything to do with him.

Sure, he couldve handled the situation a little better, but a lot of the public chaos was probably created by his agent Sexton, and he wouldve looked horrible regarldess if he ended up leaving. College Coaches have a very small window to maximize their earnings because many dont end up making it long term, I dont blame him for jumping ship especially in this environment when players and come and go as they please.

You know the craziest thing about all this to me?

That these rich alumni are willing to throw away many, many millions of dollars to hire and fire football coaches. The numbers are staggering and keep going up, and given how few coaches actually work out, you would think the rich guys would eventually have second thoughts.

Or learn a lesson from our Jimbo fiasco.

But hope springs eternal.

The CFP championship game is January 19, 2026. The last day to enroll at A&M for the spring semester is January 12, 2026. What mechanism is in place to allow a kid to enroll after classes start?

The same one that allowed Julian Sayin to enroll at Ohio State after classes started.

Do you really think the registrar's office is going to be the reason a highly sought after football player can't transfer?

so you acknowledge you were wrong about when the transfer portal closes.

and as Panama Red pointed out, A&M would happily find a way to get a transfer enrolled after classes started.

Hero Kanu left ohio state the last week of january and was enrolled at texas for the spring.

I think about this often. All these grown ass men getting off on winning college football games. Building practice facilities, renovating weight rooms & locker rooms that are still brand new, paying coaches millions to leave, or throwing money at teenage football players that have no real affiliation to the university.

I guess it's their money, and they get to spend it however they choose. I'm sure many of them actually do support other genuine causes, but those aren't as visible.

I don't feel bad for Ole Miss. LK and their fans were a perfect cultural match.

IMO, the only better jobs for LK would be t.u. or ohio state. Places like Bama don't want LK because his potential benefit does not outweigh his moral, ethical, narcisstic, etc. tendencies.

Looking back at the questions of who A&M would hire to replace someone (as someone who started his time at A&M with Jackie but majority of my tenure was RC) ...

Urban Meyer, Sark, LK, etc. would never fit into the A&M culture.

RC before his trist, Sherman and Elko are very good fits for a culture that appreciates a more honorable way of doing their business.

I doubt that anyone will ever build a statue of LK in Baton Rouge. He is a doo-ssh of the highest order.
