To keep how good we've been in perspective, here's the record for the 3 coaches that started last year:

Elko
19 - 6. Was 16 - 9 at Duke

DeBoer
19 - 6. Was 25 - 3 at Washington.

Lebby
7 - 17. Was OC at Oklahoma

Elko is doing work. He's getting us results, and making adjustments.

For comparison, Vegetables at Ou is 16 - 8 in the last two seasons, and he's been coach there since 2022. Sark is 20 - 4 (regular season) in the last two years, and he's been there since 2021.

But the reason I think we're all on pins and needles is our history. Sumlin's first two seasons were 20 - 6. Sumlin got a 10 win season, and then couldn't maintain. Fisher's first two seasons were 17 - 9. Fisher essentially held us at 8 & 4.

Elko isn't repeating history. He's moving pieces around and improving our deficiencies. Friday hurt, but we can still go collect the most important trophy.

If Elko can get A&M in the playoffs more than half the time. Even something like 70 percent of the time. That's huge. That's mostly 10 win seasons.

Nothing I've seen shows that can't be accomplished, yet.

Yeah, Friday was disappointing. But, is what it is. Hope the team learns from it, and moves on. If they play 4 quarters of the football they are capable of playing, they are hard to beat.

Today's winner for the General Board Burrito Lottery is:

... wins and losses doesn't tell half the story.

I'm hoping this embarrassing route in Austin reminds the players and coaches we haven't won anything yet. 11-1 is a nice season for sure, but since our return from the long road trip, we haven't played our best ball.

We nearly choked on the cocks from that terrible first half performance. Our starters looked great vs hapless Sanford, but they really only got one quarter of play, if that. Some starters sat out completely.

I hope we play like our hair is on fire the rest of the season. It could still be an amazing season, but not if we play like we did Friday. We can't look like the team that expects to win. We have to be the team that is proving the doubters wrong. We have to play with an incredible since of urgency.

We didn't get routed. We had 2 turnovers and a missed FG.

I'm an Elko fan, but this year was a pretty favorable schedule. Elko didn't make the schedule, of course, but it's a positive sign that he made the most of it (minus 1.5 games) when it seems like so many previous A&M coaches would have massively underachieved.

Regardless of when this ride ends, he has done a helluva job. all of those road game victories stand out for me with Notre Dame being the highlight of course

Hindsight, preseason rankings can be nonsense but 5 of the 8 SEC teams on the schedule were in the top 15 at the beginning of the season. Nobody was saying this was a favorable schedule then even though it played it that way.

Tell me about Sark's first 2 years? Still in the BDF?

All you have to do is look at last year with the inverse (in terms of venues), but otherwise nearly identical schedule and he went 8-4.
Glad we cashed in this year, but last year the opportunity was definitely there as well.

This year has made me cautiously optimistic about Elko, but this year will feel very different if we don't win at least one playoff game and then regress to 8-4 next year.

Here's the SEC and Power 4 records for the 3 coaches that started last year:

Elko: 12-4 and 13-6 with bowl loss to USC

DeBoer: 12-4 and 13-6 with bowl loss to Michigan

Lebby: 1-15 and 2-16, including 1-1 against Arizona State, and has an embarrassing 41-17 home loss to Toledo last year

If Elko can win at least one playoff game and go at least 9-3 against next year's tougher schedule that features 10 regular season games against Power 4 opponents: 9 conference games and a nonconference game against Arizona State, he will prove that this 11-1 finish wasn't just because of a favorable SEC schedule.

it's all fun with numbers...

but if you go back and look at the 2012 schedule...

the 2012 team (11-2) played 2 FCS opponents

and only 7 of their 11 wins were against P-5 opponents

plus Auburn (3-9) and Arkansas (4-8) were historic trainwrecks that season

great seasons almost always come with favorable scheduling

to be fair...Louisiana Tech was a strong non-P-5 opponent in 2012

That's not unique to A&M though.
And after they gelled together as a team, they got better each game, and likely win a Natty had they been in a position to play for it.
Nobody was stopping the offense (at that time, in that year), and the defense was good enough (not great) to hold their own.

You have to factor in the players themselves.
Big difference when you have a lot of returning upperclassmen starters.
Just like there will be a big difference next year when a boatload of these same multi-year starters are gone.

And we're not built up as a roster yet to just reload yet.

The greats put 10+ players into the NFL Draft pretty much every year. This year we'll get close to that. Maybe for the first time ever?
But next year we will not. And it'll show itself in the games and likely in the win/loss column too.

And the potbangers will get loud and stupid, Fire everybody, regression is unacceptable, being in year 3 doesn't matter, yadda yadda yadda. Just wait and see.
