I just think what makes college football unique is that passion/tradition/rivalries/history and the fact that fans actually have attachment to their teams.
If were saying it's fine that our war hymn is about beating another a school but actually nah we don't really care about that game or winning it, then that's fine to think that way that's just not why I enjoy college football.
If it was all about your record I would just watch pro sports, which plenty of people do, but I just have no interest in.
this. some of yall just want to watch the nfl. do that. it sucks, but its what youre campaigning for.
Disagree. While college football has become NFL-lite, that does not change the maroon blood coursing through my veins. It does not change my desire to beat the ever living hell out of sip at everything. But I refuse to accept the age-old mentality of accepting a 1-11 season so long as the 1 is against the sips. They are a big name, but they are just one of many big names on our schedule every season. I'd argue that LSU, Alabama, and Georgia are bigger.
I was just as hurt over losses to South Carolina and Auburn as I was with the loss at home to tu last season. I cannot stomach losing to LSU, and the idea of losing to Arkansas makes me want to stick my head in an oven.
And with the expanded playoff, I see that as a better opportunity for A&M to finally put an end to a statement that I've been making for years - we haven't done anything since Adolf Hitler was thinking about conquering the world. If that means I want to watch the NFL, then so be it, but even when I did watch the NFL, I never looked at it the same way that I look at college football and the Aggies in particular.
Im not knocking anyone's bonafides, im just saying people are arguing for a world where every game is meaningless unless we win a national title. Yall, one team a year wins a national title. You have to make the playoffs to win the title now, but most cfb fans couldn't name you half the teams that made the playoff last year.
And most NFL fans couldnt' name you half the teams that made the playoffs either. Nor could MLB, NHL, NBA, etc. Because fans tend to focus on their team and not so much every other team out there.
I know you think you are making some salient point - but you aren't. The idea that every game is meaningless unless we win a title is bunk because in order to win that title, you have to play and win a regular season's worth of very meaningful games plus more meaningful games as you progress through the playoff bracket. The season is much more than a single game against a single team.
That doesn't mean rivalries have to die, and absolutely nobody is making an argument of that nature. The logical ones, though, are making the argument that sacrificing the entire season just to thump your chest because you won a game or one upped a pissant school like tu because you view them as the ultimate rival is flat out stupid. They can be both a rival and another stepping stone on the way to the playoffs - that is possible. And, like this year, if we don't win (which sucks) but still have a chance to make the bracket and a chance to do something far, far, far bigger than simply beating tu - that is a much better and much more desireable outcome.
Remember - they will be watching from their couch, beating us didn't change that fact. We still win. You may not have been alive in 2005 when they won the national championship. I was, and I know exactly what the feeling is like seeing a team you hate win the championship. Same with lsu and their titles in both football and baseball - and that is a much more hurtful and longer lasting sting than the sting of losing a regular season game, and it isn't even closer in comparison. Losing the regular season game is a bee sting. Watching them win a national championship is getting kicked in the stones repeatedly by a mule.
