We last won in 1939. That is 86 years ago.

For someone to sufficiently remember hearing about this or having watched the Aggies in 1939 would be 100 years old today.

Do you know of anyone in the past who had watched or remembers the Aggie win in 1939?

I really hope we can renew the year and make it 2025 or something in the near future.

My grandfather just had his 99th bday the day before Thanksgiving. He was born in '26 and was 13 when we won. Doubt anyone outside of A&M immediate associates even knew. He certainly doesn't remember. Not like nationwide coverage was a big thing.

My President's Endowed Scholarship sponsor was Class of '41. I do not recall if we discussed it.

I watched the Aggies win a National Championship on campus in 2017, if that counts for anything

No one did.

They voted on it after the games were over. There was no championship game, it was purely a beauty contest.

Dad, '41, has been gone since 06. He hitchhiked to game and since he was a waiter and knew football players, They let him sleep on floor of their room as he had no where to stay. It just dawned on me that he loved New Orleans, even though he was not a drinker. I guess that was great experience for him.
Loved me some pancakes at Homer Nortons pancake house at main gate. Dad let us eat what we wanted.

I think it was in the 1910s but also in 1939?
When was the first championship game?

I met a player from that team at Luby's one time when I was in middle school. He saw my A&M shirt and came up to talk to me.

We beat the Horns in 1939 and then crashed right after. Lost tons in a row all through the 40s.

1998 would be as close as it could be argued. That's when the first BCS championship game was played.

Before that it was strictly a function of voters voting champions after the bowl games were played.

Before that it was in 1963 when #1 SCw played #2 Wisconsin in the Rose Bowl. The next time it happened was in the 1987 Fiesta Bowl when #1 Miami played #2 Penn State.

To be fair, Aggies were busy winning a world war.

Back then, they voted for the final time even before the bowl games.

You really don't know that title games are a relatively new thing?

I know there were bowls and one of them was tagged as the National Championship.
Back in the 90s I didn't care too much about football to be honest.

My dad is 97. He's class of '49. His older brother was class of '42, which meant he was a freshman in the fall of '39. My uncle had a banner commemorating the championship season.

In the early 90's I had the opportunity to meet a couple of old Ag's from the class of 39, and discuss the championship season (and kicking nazi ass) at length.

I'm sure they are long gone now, but that was certainly an enjoyable conversation.

I met Norbert Ohlendorf once in Rudder Theatre. He was one of the Junction Boys. Not a national champion but the closest I can find I guess

Yes, Tommie Vaughn, class of 1941. Played on the '39 National Championship team.

I bought a car from him in 1999. He was kind enough to autograph a football for me. I'll never forget his strong handshake.

Before the BCS, there were just bowl games that maybe featured 1 vs 2. It's why there are shared national champions

This. The top 2 teams rarely played each other due to the conference tie ins of the bowls. They started trying to make that happen in the early to mid 90s with the Bowl Alliance and Bowl Coalition, but the Rose Bowl wouldn't play ball so the PAC and BIG weren't eligible. It wasn't til the BCS when there was a true national title game guaranteeing the #1 and #2 playing each other. Like someone mentioned above, there weren't even polls after the bowl games until the late 60s/early 70s I think. The national championship just wasn't that big of a deal, the goal was to beat your rival, win your conference, and get a good bowl game.

My great uncle was a backs coach on that team, so it's a bit of family lore. He passed, however, before I was old enough to engage in discourse concerning his very storied involvement with AMC.

At one time the national championship was voted on before the bowl games were even played. One of tu's claimed NC's was declared (UPI coaches poll) before they lost their bowl game to ND - 1970 season.

Another NC determining game - before they actually forced it to happen - was Dec 6, 1969 when #1 Texas played #2 Arkansas. It was the last regular season game and both teams went on the play bowl games afterwards, but it more or less determined the NC.

NoahAg hit on something that has always bothered me when the overall record between A&M and Texas gets trotted out. Up until 1965 A&M was compulsory military and much, much smaller as well as all male. With coed, and the non-mandatory Corps, the college began to grow into a University, but in 1970 the enrollment of University of Texas was still over 3x larger than A&M. I personally feel that if you want to take a "reasonable" comparison of football records, you need to start at about 1980 and look from there on as before it is similar to a much smaller school or service academy to a larger state university. They simply were not the same "type" of school in student body, enrollment or resources.
