My maternal grandfather was Class of '25. He went to the game, and my oldest cousin has the game program. My grandfather died in 1981 though.

NoahAg hit on something that has always bothered me when the overall record between A&M and Texas gets trotted out. Up until 1965 A&M was compulsory military and much, much smaller as well as all male. With coed, and the non-mandatory Corps, the college began to grow into a University, but in 1970 the enrollment of University of Texas was still over 3x larger than A&M. I personally feel that if you want to take a "reasonable" comparison of football records, you need to start at about 1980 and look from there on as before it is similar to a much smaller school or service academy to a larger state university. They simply were not the same "type" of school in student body, enrollment or resources.

I became a student in 1981. My count starts there. And I believe tu holds a 3 game advantage as of right now starting in 1981 (Ags are 15-18 against tu since 1981). Unfortunately, they (tu) are 11-3 vs the good guys in the last 14, so recently has not been very good.

- note we did win in 1979 and 1980 so 17-18 since 1979, and we split the 4 games before that, so since 1975 its 19-20. Prior to 1975 it's not good for the Ags.

This. Also the fact that the number of alumni was way smaller well into the current century.

My dad is 97. He's class of '49. His older brother was class of '42, which meant he was a freshman in the fall of '39. My uncle had a banner commemorating the championship season.

Would love to see a picture of that banner, if you have it. Please post if you do.

It's not in my possession, but it looks like this:

There are a lot of them floating around.

Mom (still living at 86) was 7 months old when the Ags won the national championship.

I got to meet several of those former players in 1989 when they had their 50th reunion in College Station. They were awarded national championship rings that day. Hard to fathom that those men are all gone now.

Dad passed away a year ago. He enrolled at A&M in 1941. Dad didn't play football, but he told me he knew a few of the players from the 1939 championship team who were still there. And yes, he attended every home game in 1941 and 1942. Working, going up and down the aisles selling cokes. I bet he didn't sell many . . . he just did that so he could get in free! And he said he went to most of the away games too.

When I was in the corps in the early 1980s, some old men who had played on the 1919 (I think, it may have been 1920 something) team ate at Duncan with us one night. They were some big guys.

10/6/98. During my freshman year, I waited on a guy at Red Lobster who was given his '39 Championship ring that day. I wish I could remember his name.

I attended every game.

My BAS wouldn't let me enjoy that season either.

Homer never seemed to have the boys ready to play. Yes we won, but we never seemed to play a complete game.

#FireHomer was trending all season.
