They lost to Northwestern. A nerd school with an atrocious football history. Some "Scarlet Letters" can't be overlooked.

There's no denying they had a bad year. But Franklin did go 13-3, 11-2 and 10-3 the 3 previous years. Many schools would build a coach like that a statue. There's nothing wrong with expectations. Until they reach the point of being ridiculous. And the small group of coaches who people see as capable of possibly winning a NC aren't interested in ridiculous expectations. They can make the same money with the same support where they are and very likely have job security by winning double digit games and making the playoffs regularly.

Franklin had one bad year and that was 2020. Six 10 win seasons and 10 years where Franklin won 7 or more games. I would trade Fran and Sherman for those years that Franklin had.

I disagree.

The 9 years prior to Franklin Penn State actually had a better win % than with Franklin and that includes some years after scandal where they lost some studs. The 50 years prior to Franklin win % was better as well.

Franklin wasn't some great coach.

Although I agree looks like Penn State flubbed the new hire.

Art Briles will take that job. PSU should give him a call. That's a match made in errrr you know where.

Penn State did not learn from tu and ther troubles after parting ways with Mack Brown.

Tu was/is so arrogant they believed it would be easy to replace Ol' Buttertooth with a better HC (Saban) who would propel them back to national champion status.

Tu should have used Brown's last season to have a proven HC waiting to jump in before they pushed Brown out. Instead, they starting asking around after he left and were shocked at the rejections. They then had to settle on Charlie Strong.

A big problem coaching at schools like tu and Penn State is that the HC has to not only be a good coach/administrator, he has to also be a good politician. Many coaches don't want to deal with the politics.

Brown was the perfect coach for them. He knew how to effectively lie to Texas HS coaches and glad hand the sip money men. And with ABC ESPN etc covering for any screw up he should have accomplished much more with what he had to work with. Thankfully for us he sucked at the coaching part of the job.

It should have been easy for them to upgrade in the actual coaching department but I assume their big money guys just like most other schools wanted to also have a say in what happened on the field.

The best example or maybe the worst is when Rich Rodriguez took the Michigan job and was told he couldn't run the plays he liked to run because "that wasn't Michigan football". Then why did you hire him then smart guys?

Love the talking heads who said PSU was a better job than A&M and Elko was their top candidate. Now we know that A&M, Tennessee, LSU, Florida and BYU are also better jobs.

It is pretty ironic that Penn State led the coaching carousel charge and have still not locked anybody in.

Especially when they fired him so they could have somebody hired by early signing day. And here we are! It's a thing of beauty!

Considering the new era of football some of the programs that were once considered the good jobs will no longer be thought of as such.

They are down to 3 recruits and one of them has not signed yet.

Well ... at least they signed their QB, and hopefully he is as Fluitie-esque as he looks, because he may have an OL full of walk-ons ...

When you have a coaching change, HS recruiting class is pretty much a write off and you have to go portal heavy; that's basically how it goes for everyone in the modern day. Shouldn't be disastrous for Penn State as long as, you know, they get a coach at some point.

to me, the winners of the coaching carousel moves so far is Texas A&M, Indiana, Missouri (all who retained their coaches), Virginia Tech and LSU (who upgraded their coaches)

Auburn will be interesting and may likely be an upgrade too.
