This is where the downfall of the last 2 coaches started to occur....losing top assistants and not being able to replenish..neither coach could recover. Sumlin lost Kliff and Fisher lost (of all people) Elko. So this is another area where Elko can differentiate...gonna earn that $11 million for sure...

Evidently word on the street is we are promoting a guy who has never called plays before. Bold move

It's a huge decision for sure. I thought Sumlin promoting McKinney was better than what we ended up with when he replaced him with Spavital.

Georgia hired Kirby Smart, who had never been a head coach before. Just saying.

That's a bit different than hiring a play caller who has never called plays before. Hopefully he learns quickly

Yeah but everyone knew he was ripe for a HC job. He had been for a couple years before he went to Georgia.

In today's environment everyone is being promoted before they are ready. Even in the NFL.

I'm ok with Wiggins if Elko thinks he's ready for the OC position. He was listed as Co-Coordinator under Klein and he was an Assistant HC/WR under Saban at Bama. And he's done a phenomenal job with our WRs the last two years.

Honestly Durkin was not a bad hire for Jimbo and was not the reason for his ultimate failure.

We have taken multiple approaches to coordinator hires with varying results for all types of hires.

We should not be a learn on the job type program. Elko needs to conduct a nationwide search to find the best possible OC that has a record of success. That is what elite programs do.

I'd be disappointed if its Wiggins. He's been a position coach for 20 years. That's a long time to never be responsible for running an offense.

Might want to research who the OC is for Ohio State.

Brian Hartline learned on the job. Posts like this as if every situation is black and white are so stupid.

Well he's been coaching a little more than 20 years. At this point, he's either ready to be a coordinator, or it ain't gonna happen.

He may turn out better than you think.

Per premium, it's Wiggins. A major football program with a **** ton of money giving the keys to a guy who is still using training wheels is no surprise honestly.

Don't think any of these 3 would come nor really on the list...but opinions already forming on who to hire.

All great head coaches know how to handle coordinator turnover. Look at Saban, Smart, Day, etc...; they have gone through a lot of coordinator turnover but it doesn't matter; they select the right coordinators and manage them to perform up to expectation.

I've never been on a coaching staff, but it seems to me that being a coordinator means making quick decisions under pressure, which is not a skill you develop as a position coach. I'd like to see someone with a proven track record in that role.

These coaches all network and talk. There is no "nationwide search."

Doesn't sound like there was a search at all if you promote a 20 year position coach.

Elko needs to do better than last time. He completely failed on his choice for DC. And on OC, I'd give that a B- at best. Go hire someone proven elite who'd be a A hire.

Yeah. I mean we could barely stay in the top 3 for most of the year. Now we have to host a home game in the playoffs. Big fail.

I think the downfall of both was less failing to replace coaches that left as much as refusing to make changes when replacement coaches had questionable processes and poor results. Being smug about running 3 DL sets with a stacked room of elite DL or about questionable blocking schemes that saw players regress and the OL consistently struggle with missed assignments are the first examples that come to mind.

Chip Kelly, Bobby Petrino, Billy Napier to name a few are all available and are proven to not only run good offenses but can run a team. I wouldn't mind someone that has some skins to challenge Elko when he gets too conservative offensively.

Also just becuase they are failed as HC doesn't mean they can't run a good offense. KK for example.
90ags
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Elko just signed extension and rec'd more money for asst coaches and has more control. He can totally decide and either hit a home run or mess up the hire. Only time will tell.
