12 teams? They'll argue over #13.

16 teams? They'll argue over #17.

64 teams? They'll argue over #65.

The long and the short of it is - whoever is at x + 1 does not deserve a shot at the national championship. Hell, the #11 and #12 teams in this year's playoffs don't deserve a shot either. But the line has to be drawn somewhere.

Longwinded arguments can be held about who is x vs. x + 1, but neither one really deserves a shot so the argument is moot.

Oh, and Cathago delenda est

Facts.

I'm tired of constantly hearing "expand the playoff" even after moving to 12 teams. It's never going to be enough for these people. At least with 12 teams the chances of an undefeated team getting left out is basically zero, so you can respond to "my team got screwed" with "well, you should have won more games".

If your goal is to determine the best team in the country, there is no way that a team ranked #13 or lower going into the postseason would truly qualify. Now, if your goal is to have a wacky/fun/chaotic entertainment experience, a mega-playoff like March Madness would be the solution, but not if your goal is to find the best team.

Regardless of how many teams are in the playoffs, whether they are considered "truly qualified" or not, as long as the true best team is in it, the process will work itself out. No one has to find the best team; the playoff process will determine that, and in the end, the true best team will win the championship.

its going to goto 16 eventually
Guaranteed

The fact that the current top 4 does not get a chance at a home playoff game makes zero sense.
The bye does not do much, ask the top 4 last year.

It will goto 16
The 1st two rounds are home games for the higher seed.
Youre not adding anymore weeks to the season. Its the exact same time frame.
You keep the exact same setup with the bowl games you currently have in place.

This would only be true if the better overall team will always beat the worse overall team. This is obviously not the case, as 1, upsets happen all the time, and 2, often you get different outcomes when the same teams play each other multiple times in the same season (Georgia and Alabama in the 2021 season, for example). Athletic variance is a thing. The best team on one particular game day may not be the same as the best team when viewing the season as a whole.

The best way to determine the "best" team (when defining "best" in terms of the whole season, not just the end) would not be to have a massive playoff, it would be to expand the regular season, and mandate more cross-conference play during the regular season. Basically, the more data points, the better.

I looked up basketball yesterday.

Google AI summary said since 1985 ZERO 12-16 seeds have won the whole thing.

The exact same will hold for football. Sure upsets can and do happen in brackets. They're one and two offs. They just aren't going to string together the 3-4 or more wins required for the championship.

There will ALWAYS be teams left out. The more you add, the more that will be left on the sidelines. That's not the point. What should be asked, can any of those first teams out string together back to back wins against the top 4.?

For example, let's go to 24 with 2-12 team brackets. Odds on one side, evens in the other. 1-8 get byes. So two brackets just like the current one. Interestingly JMU is#24 right now, but Iowa at #23. Who here thinks either of those take can be the national champion? Even IF they were to somehow manage to win their bracket, could they win the final? JMU is 24 right now and as the G5 they're 12th in. So IF they manage to win the 12 team do you really think they could pull another win against an equally strong team? Doesn't matter, they're not going to make it out of round 1.

Bama at 9 isn't winning it all.
