Campbell's 3 best seasons at ISU were 2024 (11 wins), 2020 (9 wins), and this year (8 wins against only 4 losses so far). I think you can throw 2020 in the trash as a large number of schools mailed that year in. This year, they were SEVENTH in the Big 12. I mean, 8 wins is OK -- better than 4 or 6 certainly -- but if its your THIRD best year in a decade of coaching at a school, you can't say the coach is getting "more" out of any player.
People are analyzing Campbell's record at Iowa State compared to that school's history. Its perfectly fine to say he's the best (or one of the best) coaches in their history, but don't overstate his credentials. Outside of a couple of runs and a few decent wins, the rest of his results, in terms of overall performance in a college football program, are totally mediocre. He won't have the title of Penn State's best coach by repeating his 3 best seasons at ISU. In fact, he will have to produce FAR BETTER results just to keep up with Franklin's most recent results.
It is STUPID to suggest that if Franklin couldn't win 12 or more games -- or the NC -- at Penn State that Matt Campbell is somehow going to win it there. If they were going to fire Franklin and hire one of about a half dozen coaches that arguably ARE better, that might have been one thing. But in this case, they shouldn't have fired Franklin. They had a hissy fit over a couple of what appeared at the time to be bad losses that turned out weren't as bad as they appeared. Campbell will be gone in 3-4 years.
This board's love for people like Mike Leach and Matt Campbell, neither of whom ever won anything in a "power conference," is totally bizarre given the simultaneous total disdain for everything not SEC or Big 10. It actually isn't just bizarre -- it goes way beyond that.
