Preseason rankings are trash

Get rid of them. Teams have so much turnover with NIL and portal that preseason rankings have only one use. Keeps the top teams at the top and makes it harder for the other teams to get an opportunity. Ex: if Rice had tu record and schedule they would not even be in discussion for CFP. They only want the names playing for revenue purposes. That's why ND always gets picked over is. Yes I know it is obvious. Just wanted to rant.

Texas is not in the playoff discussion.

Despite so many posters telling us they would get in at 9-3.

Too much impact on marketing revenue to get rid of it.

Seems they could just hype up the first ranking after a month of football, and discuss that all of September like they talk about the CFP now.

They're not getting in, but they are in the discussion, don't kid yourself.

His point is still valid.

Yes, the early season rankings are indeed harmful for the competitive integrity of the sport. But let us not delude ourselves, the people running this sport are money makers and distributors. Their primary job is revenue. This is late stage capitalism, where "if monetizable, must be monetized". High school sports are even moving in this direction (at least at the larger schools and districts). Rankings will be issued the day after the NC game, because clicks.

No none is discussing Texas getting in other than whining bleeders with no clue on the process.

Preseason rankings aren't going away. Yes, they're worthless as a guaranteed prediction of success. The purpose is to generate discussion, debate and excitement for the upcoming season.

Exactly.

How could you even dictate they go away?

That's only because the topic has now shifted to trying to get 10-3 Alabama into the field...

If the AP, espn and fox doesn't make stuff up, like 90% of sports content across every single platform goes away.

Since the people who make up stuff in sports are paid very well by companies to get their horrible products in front of your eyeballs, fake rankings won't be going away anytime soon.

True, but preseason rankings are trash and practically predetermine the way the cookie will crumble in a dispute later in thr season.

I wish there'd be 0 rankings until at least week 6. We should be paying off pollsters to keep our rankings as artificially as high as the texas' of the world.

And coach elko- you gotta start running the score up any chance you get. People see box scores and nothing else. Doesn't matter who its agaisnt, score as many as possible.

You can't and shouldn't. That's censorship. If you don't like them, the solution is simple, don't look.

I don't know that that would change things much. If they waited until after four games were played, they would still slot the big media darlings in. Notre Dame or the sips could go 2-2 and still get a high ranking.

Very true.

But there is no way to prevent that.

I feel like the pre season hype is why Oregon is fifth. Best win is USC and their second CFP ranked win in Iowa might go away today. We really need Missouri back in. Personally us and Ole Miss deserve 5/6 over them.

Is it that? Or is it the perception that absolutely will be created that by participating in your conference championship game could and will lead to you being left out of the playoffs if you lose? That discussion is real. And discussion of eliminating the conference championship games is already occurring because their importance has diminished greatly with many due to the expanded playoffs. There are people on both sides of this issue.

Oregons position at #5 was strengthened last night with Indy's win. I agree they shouldn't be there but now the committee is a lot less likely to reseed them.

If they won't eliminate the preseason rankings then make them have to work to adjust their process.
The final rankings should carry over as the preseason, regardless of other factors, and then the AP can reshuffle after week two results.
The AP preseason top 25 is unidentifiable for two years in a row going into the playoffs.

Rethink the AP poll, who is in it, and what the requirements to be an AP voter. I think you need some sort of preseason ranking, I just think the bots (people) we have voting look at brand names/last season records to vote.

With that being said, you have to take some sort of "test" to work at ESPN and they also have some absolute abysmal takes. BUT, ESPN does have money involved.

Bad position from the onset.

Ags have same record, better road wins, similar SOS & SOR, and an "equal" loss - on road vs top #12 rival VS at home vs #1.

Agree 100%.
Ags were taken to the proverbial woodshed for that horn loss when a simple timeout was more appropriate.
