The message is that if you aren't flawless or nearly flawless -meaning not more than one respectable loss - you might find yourself out of the playoff bracket, because you aren't in a conference. I actually think it's good that Notre Dame is left out this year because they need to join a conference. Their independence has given them special status up until now. They belong in the Big Ten if they want equal consideration.
