I'm conflicted. On one hand, these kids are now getting paid- this grown up time now, not voluntary anymore remember?? They whined & moaned about getting paid, well guess what, donors/NIL collectives have paid yall so get your asses suited up for the "who gives a F" bowl…

On the other hand- it would be funny as hell to watch more and more teams opt out and watch the whole circus of a system come crumbling down….

ESPN & the conferences made this mess- funny to watch it burn down and cost them millions

Imagine if Netflix had paid $70M for the rights to broadcast the ACC championship game.

It feels like it's time for bowls to end for non-playoffs.

But it sure is fun to watch ND get raked over the coals for being titty-babies about bowing out.

Imagine being TNT/HBO lol

Brutal draw. Not a lot of eyeballs will be watching those 2 first round games. Yikes.

Dock their pay for the bowl games they skip. I like the idea of letting the system destroy itself. Call me an 'old head' but I enjoyed CFB more when players were loyal to an institution and coaches didn't get poached during the season.

unfortunately, the schools don't have the leverage on the players to force them to play

Do the players' NIL deals not include extra payments for a bowl game, CCG, and advancing in the playoffs like the coaches do? If so that needs to be fixed ASAP.

While I think there are definitely too many bowl games, I don't want them to end. I love have daily college football for the better part of 2 weeks while I'm at work

This. Don't know why so many people hate the bowl games. They are fun, and usually a lot better games than the playoffs, which have been mostly blowouts.

What I don't like is that they've been devalued. The players are making serious money now. Plus the mentality is playoff or bust.

Who cares if you get to go to San Diego and they give you a free Nintendo switch and other goodies. They're already rich, and playing a meaningless game when it could only hurt your NIL value doesn't make sense.

Honestly making the playoffs is the goal for most major programs now. After opt outs and the portal the bowl games aren't really meaningful or interesting anymore. If they expand the playoffs to 16 or 20 then take the top bowl games and make them play-ins for the remaining 4 or 8 spots. You can even rotate the bowl games as play-ins from year to year. Leave the lower tier bowl games for the G5 programs. Something has to change because people don't want to watch 40-50 man rosters with interim head coaches and staff play each other in a meaningless game.

I used to love bowl season before the portal and NIL. Now if it isn't a playoff, it's mostly a collection of 2nd and third stringers with no hussle

Other than a couple of bowls that have done a great job marketing their game and creating some fun around it - Pop Tarts Bowl is a must watch - they mostly suck. They don't mean anything and any player that is potentially bound for the NFL doesn't play.

In my ongoing realization that I want all things to reset about 20-30 years ago, I would almost rather we go back to the old school bowl system where no NC is really crowned. The AP picks someone and then we mostly ignore it because the Cotton, Rose, Sugar, and Orange Bowls were the actual end of year culmination of the sport. I miss those days.

You say that, but the bowls get pretty good ratings

I definitely miss the excitement of New Year's Day. It was like being a kid on Christmas day for CFB fans.

There have been entirely too many bowls for way too long. It jumped the shark in the late 90's/very early 2000's when teams with losing records started to play in them. Completely devalued the entire thing.
Programs used to tout bowl appearances almost like conference championships. It actually meant something.
Hell, for DECADES, unless you were the Big 10 champ and went to the Rose Bowl, you didn't go to a bowl game in the Big 10.

Bowls will never end. Too much $ at stake and there are enough teams each year that will want to play in Bowls.
Some bowls are still meaningful to some teams.

ahhh yes, this explains why Aggies celebrate stuffing Bo Jackson, injuring Ty Detmer and stealing Tim Brown's towel the way our peers celebrate championships

Not if their agents are smart. I wouldn't want my asset risking injury before the next auction.

So right! As a kid I remember bargaining with the folks to be able to stay up to at least get to see the Orange Bowl halftime show (can't watch any of them now...)..add in the sad realization that when that day ended we had to wait until September to do it all again.

I'm convinced most of the persistent whiners don't even watch football, or else they'd know that. They just glob onto whatever the trending topic is and spew hot takes.

They're the same posters who show up on the Aggie baseball board in May or so to ***** about whatever topic is getting the most views. Preferably after the team is eliminated. Football is actually on an upswing, so they complain about the format and the system.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not one of those people. I want to win a NC and people that want to beat Texas instead of winning a NC are losers of the highest order.

I'm just expressing nostalgia for a simpler time I guess. It's hard to get excited about a playoff system that is so utterly stupid, illogical, and corrupt as the current FBS system.

But, trust me, if we win it this year I'll be crowing about it while simultaneously still calling for it to be overhauled.

It's just mindblowing to me that we have baked in corruption that is public and part of the selection criteria and the SEC and Big10 don't seem to care....until it punishes one of their teams.

Agreed, with the advent of the playoffs the bowls have become outdated that no one puts any emphasis on anymore. The results are superficial since players often opt out and teams aren't at the normal talent level. The only beneficiaries is the corporate money recipients. Even the yearly Biel Pick'Ems are not even fun anymore not knowing who is going to be on the field.

Let the bowl system implode. Over the past 30 years the bowl system has gotten too bloated. Bowls haven't meant anything beyond the ones with Top 10 / National Champion implications. When you get 5-7 teams making bowls we've obviously have too many bowls.

As mentioned earlier - burn it down.

I dont know, having Arch have to suit up to play in the Cheez-Itz bowl after having missed his pre-ordained visit to NYC for the Heisman ceremony is pretty gd funny. How many sunglasses can he sell during that game?

Read where the Birmingham Bowl has been turned down by at least six schools for an open spot opposite Georgia Southern. May start digging into the 4-8 or 3-9 pile of teams to fill it.

Looks like 8 teams have decided they don't want to play in a bowl game. I would guess with the number of bowl games plus them not meaning anything outside of the playoffs, it is to be expected.

When I was younger I cared about bowls...something about getting out heads kicked in more often than not plus the fact that there were so many other teams that kept on playing because they were in a better bowl....am I really supposed to think winning a dogcrap bowl between Christmas and New Years day does anything for the program outside the extra practice time? Where did Johnny's comeback vs Duke or our Orange Bowl win get us? Bowls are about as meaningless as all star games. If you're into em, good for you and I'm glad someone enjoys them. Of course, I'll always watch the Aggies play and I'm mad when we lose and relieved when we win, I'll just never give a sht about being the Belk Bowl champions.

And there ain't no way I'm watching 6-6 Coastal Arkansas Tech against 7-5 Northwestern Southern face off at 2pm on a Wednesday live from Tuscon.
