Not sure this is a surprise but glad he's staying.

Not saying that it's not deserved, but since paying players is relatively new, is being highest paid really a big surprise?

This bodes well.

KC to draft, which is great!

Also - on these contracts - can they opt out of bowl? The USF - ODU was weird as both starters set out.

This is ridiculous. It has turned college athletics into NFL farm teams!

I am not surprised that Mario Craver signed a new NIL contract extension that makes him the highest paid wide receiver in Texas A&M history, but I am glad he is staying.

Folks want us to use nil to get players but when they announce they have signed for more money folks say it's ridiculous

Can't have it both ways

If we are going to be a top nil program then you're going to get announcements like this sometimes

It Is what it is

He needs to have a big game. He hasn't scored a TD since Miss. St and hasn't caught a TD since the ND game. Averaging about 40 yards per game receiving in his last 5. Time to show up on the big stage again

Contract???

I guess the new landscape helps us a lot, and stuff like this always happened behind closed doors anyway, but man it feels weird to see this kind of thing happening right before our eyes.

Players don't care about the school. Only money. Maybe it's always been that way. Yeah I'm old and it is what it is, but I don't like it.

He's only 60 yards behind KC in total receiving yards, so it's not all bad. KC is marcels go to endzone target so not sure what he can do except wait for the ball to come his way.

It has certainly always been common among those who have a real shot at the NFL. At least since the NFL has been serious business.

Yeah I'm sure you're right. Just can't see how it doesn't cause trouble in the locker room given all the inequalities.

Imo, Craver did it the right way. Straight up disclosure to the public. None of that Instagram respek my portal decision bs to gain leverage.

Act like pros and get to work.

He's also Marcel's go to for 7 yard crossing routes where he ends up 50 yards later in the endzone.

I don't understand this perspective. Getting paid automatically means you don't care about your school? I care a about my employer, even though I'm getting paid. And (smart) people always take into consideration things like culture, fit and success when weighing whether to take a job.

It's foolish to think college choice is any different. College has ALWAYS been an economic decision. 99% of A&M student are in college with the goal of growing their earnings potential. And I'd bet a whole bunch of them would have chosen another school if they felt like it set them up for a better future financial reward. Still, a whole bunch of them buy into the culture and build a great affection for the place. A few don't. Why should it be any different on the football team?

Agreed. And better than under the table.

Does anyone know for sure how these deals are structured? Are they for a set year(s) term or at least payable over time based on staying on the team, etc. It still seems like the wild west with players always looking for next highest bidder.

Someone asked Elko in the presser this week about managing coaches/players who are eyeing next season and he said he was very confident on the athletes' focus to finish this season and remain locked into the program.

To some degree he has to say that and it seems a little bit in vain when coaches have dry ink on a contract.

But on the otherhand, if a player is looking for greener pastures, the best thing he can do is perform. "LSU" or whoever does not want to spend a ton of money on a player that folds in the playoffs. The best thing you can do as a player is play lights out, stone cold killer. Half-hearted mid-season performances with one-foot out the door wont fly for this era.

Also, you have to remember how many playmakers did we pull in from the portal? They came here for the big stage and now they got it. They want to flex. They have already seen their stock skyrocket and jumping ship into another depth chart isnt going to elevate them faster than remaining and continue to excel in CS.

hopefully this doesn't affect his production this post season.

NFL players tend to play hard on a contract year then lighten up once they get the contract.

I am assuming this OP deals with revenue sharing as it says he signed with A&M, not some sponsor or booster with an NIL wallet.

with revenue sharing, it is on a yearly basis and the money is paid monthly (i think during the season), and player has to remain on the team and in good academic standing

ETA: that is generally speaking. In theory, the player could bargain for whatever
he wanted

JournoAG - excellent take.

And for the people griping about paying players/contracts/etc… Tell me more how we should regulate how much a person can sell their skills for so that you can enjoy their services / the game in the way that you want to.

I agree that it makes the college game more pro, and as a fan, do I like that? No. But the alternative is worse. Regulating what people sell their products and services for… no thanks. Yes I know we do that for a few things. And it's wrong. Like morally wrong.

South Park has a genius episode on this.

You're literally on a subscription based website based around insider information for college athletics. And you think them being compensated in a formal manner is ridiculous!?!
