On one hand, it is ridiculous... on the other, it is better than bagmen.

Highest paid WR in A&M history...that we know of.

People like to say this but it wasn't like this before.

Sure some players probably got something under the table but this is a whole new level.

Johnny isn't signing autographs in a hotel room for 50,000 when he could have been pulling in millions "legally"

He said it has turned cfb into nfl farm teams. They've always been that. The rich get richer and always get the best kids, who magically always have cash. Just because the economics and the how has changed doesn't mean major cfb hasn't always been the same wrt to "nfl farm teams"

Glad we got him signed. Price goes up as more transfers start a bidding war.

Not saying that it's not deserved, but since paying players is relatively new, is being highest paid really a big surprise?

They were always paid, it just wasn't advertised like this.

And the dollar amounts were tiny comparatively.

hopefully this doesn't affect his production this post season.

NFL players tend to play hard on a contract year then lighten up once they get the contract.

They are employees, even though the powers to be do not want to call it that. They needs to have a base salary and then they have incentives they can earn provided they accomplish certain things. Might help with those players who take a lot of plays off, don't want to play in bowl games etc.

When you pay too much, to players or to coaches, sometimes the effort isn't there. We have seen both.

That's a very very incomplete portrayal of the compensation though.

Pro athletes were making tiny amounts compared to now even in the 80s

Then theres adjustments for inflation etc etc. Yes, there was less of an open market to bring in as much bidding but it isn't all that easy when comparing amounts and benefits

Players don't care about the school. Only money. Maybe it's always been that way. Yeah I'm old and it is what it is, but I don't like it.

I don't understand this perspective. Getting paid automatically means you don't care about your school? I care a about my employer, even though I'm getting paid. And (smart) people always take into consideration things like culture, fit and success when weighing whether to take a job.

It's foolish to think college choice is any different. College has ALWAYS been an economic decision. 99% of A&M student are in college with the goal of growing their earnings potential. And I'd bet a whole bunch of them would have chosen another school if they felt like it set them up for a better future financial reward. Still, a whole bunch of them buy into the culture and build a great affection for the place. A few don't. Why should it be any different on the football team?

Who really watches football now???
