Excluding 1917 and 1919 because no one is alive from those, and they were retroactively claimed decades later, where does this year rank?

The ending was atrocious, clearly. Were the same Texas 8&4 we have been, but at least slayed a few dragons in beating teams we should beat (the bad ones)

I'd say:

1. 1939
2. 2012
3. 1998
4. 2020 (weird year, but hard to argue we weren't one of the top 4 teams at year end)
4 probably several of the 1980s teams could be argued
5. 2025?

A season where we do not even appear in a conference title game.
Don't beat Texas
And don't win a bowl/ postseason game is considered a top 5 season in the history of our program.

Yeah that's sad and shows how mediocore our program really is.

BTW. Your list is not anywhere close to accurate if you're basing your ranking on season accomplishments

1994 was a better year...even if we were on "probation".

I hope this is not the 5th best season

2020 low key deserves a lot more respect and praise.
That 2020 team would stomp a mud hole on this 2025 team.

The 1994 team was absolutely dominant and could've won a Natty. Too bad the Sips framed us and got us on double secret probation.

The '94 team was probably on par with the '92 team as both were behind the 1993 then 1991 teams.
'93 was best team in early 90's.
1994 team beat Rice 7-0 at Kyle field then tied SMU the next game in the Alamodome , they were not National title level

everyone always forgets the 1976 team

finished #7 in the final AP poll

it really helps to finish the season with a winning streak

1940 almost repeated the national championship and only lost to Tu in the last game.

1975 and 1976 were better teams despite late season collapses.

What did we win in '75?

I think the early '90s teams were really good, but the Cotton Bowls showed us what an inflated record we had because of the decline of the SWC.

The 1991 team lost to Tulsa.

The 1992 team only beat 4 teams who ended the year with a winning record...Stanford (who went 10-3), Rice (6-5), Baylor (7-5), and Texas (6-5). And if instant replay was around in 1992, we would have tied Stanford. The only TD we scored was not a catch and would have been overturned by replay. Oh, and don't forget how Notre Dame beat us like a rented mule in the Cotton Bowl.

The 1993 team lost by 30 points to Oklahoma...only beat 2 teams who ended the year with a winning record (Rice went 6-5 and Louisville went 9-3)...and lost again to Notre Dame in the Cotton Bowl.

Even Jackie's teams in the '80s were good, but couldn't consistently beat good teams. The '85 team got whipped by Bama and actually lost to Baylor. They did beat Auburn and Bo Jackson in the Cotton Bowl, but Auburn was a 4-loss team that year. The '86 team lost to LSU and Arkansas, and got whipped by Ohio State in the Cotton Bowl. Even the '87 team...one of my all-time favorite A&M teams...lost to LSU at home and lost to a mediocre Tech team in Lubbock. The dismantling of Notre Dame in the Cotton Bowl that year was a thing of beauty.

Beat Arkie in 75 we probably win a second national championship. But yeah, they won the same thing the team won this year, except in 75 we were tied for the conference championship. The tiebreaker got us.

I'll take the 2010 team last half of the season over this team.
