Sorry, I'm sure this was discussed already. But with all the resources available, why not bring in a known commodity? I have seen reports that other teams would hire him so we promoted him, but that doesn't seem like good logic.

A QB coach will not make Reed accurate all of a sudden.

I have not done research on open candidates so I can't give you a recommendation. Generally speaking however, if you are hiring someone in a senior level role, you want them to have direct experience in that position.

Gosh I don't know…..maybe someone who's been an OC before and done well at it. Something kind of like that.

Ah so like if you want to win a natty, you're gonna hire a guy who's already won one because it gives you a good chance. Got it.

Hiring a guy who's never been an OC is the most Aggie thing to do.
I know a lot about a little, and a little about a lot.

That mentality worked great with jimbo. Plus he wasnt calling plays and shaping the offense. That was Sark and Locksley.

Seems like Elko chose familiarity and continuity over a brand new scheme

Whether that works or not who knows

He's literally never called plays.
How exactly is he a stud and how can you possibly state we couldn't have hired anyone better when his OC resume' is literally blank?

It doesn't matter who was hired. This board would complain and say they deserve better.

I really don't think the lack of calling plays is that big of an issue. The scheme continuity should help the younger players develop quicker... especially the rebuilt oline

What I am concerned with is Marcel's decision making, footwork, and accuracy.... All 3 appeared to regress as the season went on

I really like the power spread that we run, but we can't continue w a quarterback this poor at throwing the football

I really hope the strategy is to bring in a qb coach that can get Marcel on the right track

The scheme that couldn't score a TD in our two biggest home games in recent memory?
The scheme that Sark owns?

then why did it take so long for him to get promoted? DC was promoted 5 minutes after the announcement that the job was open. I dont know anything, but it really seems like we settled.

the only answer is that Elko is our head coach and he hires who he wants to hire. He has a plan and I'm willing to give the guy the benefit of the doubt that he knows
What he is doing.

This is how you build a program in his mind you grow people who are loyal and hire those you know and trust. This is how you keep your finger on the pulse of it all.

I'm guessing he knows better than all you on here questioning it.

Id assume Elko didn't want to switch up the offense too much, so we wouldn't lose recruits and to keep building off of what we have built.

Elko probably interviewed candidates with pure OC experience that would plug and play, didn't work out, then defaulted to Wiggins. However, I wouldn't put Wiggins down. He has experience with great coaches.

Super popular w the players and top recruiter. WR corps has improved since his arrival, but adding Craver and KC helped.

We so have HS WR talent being added.

But as all have implied, QB coach will be imperative and I think an in game play caller. I can't tell if Elko has wide coaching network or not.

Elko said he interviewed 5 candidates and obvious choice was Wiggins.

Time will tell.

No it won't. Reed melted under the brightest lights. Receivers were wide open and he couldn't stand on the beach and throw it in the ocean.

I don't know if it's the psychological "yips" or an elbow injury he's been trying to hide, but he has lost the ability to throw an accurate ball.

Weigman, Johnson, Calzada, King, Mond, or Starkel all win that game by 2 td's.

We got outclassed in the trenches, our qb made terrible decisions, & threw inaccurately

Power spread has been run by many great teams through the years w great success

We need a better oline & better qb play

I don't understand why more people can't grasp this.
Reed lost this game because he can't throw an accurate ball with any consistency.

I would rather Elko pick the OC than folks on this board. Also, Reed CAN get better. His issues are not physical abilities, but rather mental errors. A good QB coach and a good OL can fix that. Bring in OL mercenaries via the portal.

We need a better oline & better qb play

It's funny how when a team struggles on offense everyone just assumes it's the playcalling when there's obviously a lot more that factors into it before you even get to that point.

We had a very good offense this year that had a clear Achilles' heel: the inability to play power football. This was exacerbated when our best RB got hurt. And you could especially feel it when we were unable to stretch out the defense and create space like when we were near the goal line, when the pass rush didn't give Marcel a lot of time to throw or when there were 30 mph wind gusts that made it really hard to throw down field.

It's frustrating that this was the case when we had such an experienced offensive line. And I really hope the staff does the work to fix it heading into this year. But I don't think changing the scheme is necessarily the answer as much as focusing on being able to move people in the weight room in the offseason and picking up guys in the portal who can accomplish this.

We need to do the same thing for the front seven on defense. I hope Elko and co. can do it. And honestly, they've shown me that they're pretty good at addressing need in the portal with the way they turned our offense's weakness last year -- not enough playmakers on the outside -- into it's greatest strength this year.

If we do that, I think Marcel is good enough to take us where we want to be. We need him to focus on his footwork and accuracy in the offseason, of course. But I don't see anyone in the portal who significantly moves the needle beyond him, compared to using that NIL money elsewhere on the lineup. He had a good season and has been a great representative of our university who deserves our support.
